The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze stress shift on contrastive stress of prefixes, verbs, and word stress of English words. For the phonetic and phonological analysis of the actual stress phenomena, an experiment examining three English speakers and five Korean graduate students with stress placement of 32 English words has been conducted. Another purpose is to examine if Korean speakers can learn stress shift and investigate how to produce it in terms of fundamental frequency, intensity, and duration. In the case of type A, native speakers occurred stress shift of 90% in pitch(Hz), 73% in intensity(dB), and 37% in duration(m/sec). However, in the case of type A, Korean speakers made stress shift of 52% in pitch, 35.6% in intensity, and 12.9% in duration. In the case of type B, native speakers occurred stress shift of 83%, 69%, and 31.8% in each pitch, intensity, and duration. However, Korean speakers caused stress shift of 47.6%, 23%, 19% in each pitch, intensity, and duration. Finally, in the case of type C, native speakers made stress shift of 94%, 61%, and 27.5% in each pitch, intensity, and duration. Korean speakers caused stress shift of 61.5%, 36%, and 11.8% in each pitch, intensity, and duration. Therefore, this study suggests that Korean speakers need to learn the pattern of English rhythm with other activities in order to produce English more naturally and fluently.
