정범조는 18세기 후반 근기 남인 문단을 대표하는 문인 중 한 명이다. 그의 문학론은 초기에는 허목 이래 근기 남인들이 견지해 온 상고주의의 영향을 받았다가 후에는 機神을 중시하는 문학론을 피력하였다. 이러한 문학론의 변화는 근기 남인 문단의 상고주의적인 문학관에 대한 반성적 성찰이라는 점에서 문학사적 의의가 있다. 정범조 문학에는 왕과 백성 사이에 있는 사대부로서 백성의 실상을 시문으로 남기고 이를 왕의 선정에 보탬이 되게 한다는 상고주의적 문학관이 근저에 있다. 정범조는 수백 수에 달하는 고시를 창작하여 백성의 현실을 시로 남겼고, 시의 표현적 측면에서도 『시경』, 한위고시의 표현을 능숙하게 활용하였다. 또한 정범조는 시적 대상의 세세한 면을 잘 파악해서, 있는 듯 없는 듯한 미미한 부분을 시로 잘 표현하였다. 독자가 읽고 나면 묘한 흥취를 느낀다는 점에서 그의 시는 그가 주장한 기신을 잘 표현한 한시라고 하겠다.

Jeong Beomjo was one of the most important 18th century poet in Namin literati. His early literary theory was under the archaism which was the predominant view of Namin who were influenced by Heo Mog`s theory. Later, his literary theory was changed and focued on the misterious and slight indication(機神). This change had a historical meaning on the view of reflective introspection of Namin`s archaistic literary theory. His poetry was based on the archaistic literary theory, which was helpful to king`s exemplary rule through recording the people`s life. He wrote hundreds of archaistic poems to record the people`s life. He used a lot of words quated from the Book of Odes, HanWei(漢魏) poems. Also, he catched up the detail of the object which was very hard to explain and express in a delicate words. So the reader could feel the very profound taste. He was very good at expressing the misterious and slight indication in his poetry.
