본고에서는 염상섭 초기 소설의 변화 과정을 고찰하면서 근대 초기 작가의 주 무대였던 ``매체``와 작품과의 상호영향에 특히 주목했다. 기존의 연구에서는 염상섭 초기소설의 변화 양상을 크게 ``내면적인 것에서 실제 현실에 대한 관심으로의 이동``이라는 측면에서 파악하였다. 그리고 이러한 변화의 내적 동인을 작가의 세계관의 변화라는 측면에서 분석하고 있다. 그런데 근대 초기의 작품들이 대부분 잡지와 신문을 통해 발표되었고, 이로 인해 작가들의 작품이 발표매체들과의 상호 영향 속에서 형성되었다는 점을 고려할 필요가 있다. 이 때 기존의 논의에서 좀 더 나아가 염상섭 초기 작품의 전개과정에 끼친 매체의 영향력을 짚어 볼 수 있다. 이러한 관점에서 본고에서는 『개벽』을 통해 발표된 염상섭의 작품이 당시 『개벽』이라는 잡지의 매체적 특성과 상호영향을 주고 받았으며, 이후 『동아일보』에 소설을 연재한 경험이 다시 『개벽』에 게재한 「금반지」와 「검사국대합실」의 창작에 많은 영향을 주었던 것을 밝히고자 했다. 형식적인 측면에서 볼 때 초기 소설에서는 한자가 남발되고 일본식 번역투의 문장이 나타났으나, 「금반지」와 「검사국대합실」에서는 이러한 것들이 거의 사라졌다. 내용적으로도 초기에 강하게 나타났던 내면에의 천착이 이후 풍속에 대한 관심으로 전환되었다. 이러한 현상은 바로 염상섭의 신문매체의 경험을 통해 이뤄진 것임을 알 수 있다.

Existing studies grasped the changes of initial novel trend of Yeom Sang-Seop largely in the aspect of ``shift from internal things to the concern to actual reality``. Also, they analyzed inner motive occurring such change focused on the change of his view to the world. However, the part this article emphasizes is a mutual influence between ``media`` which was main stage of works for writers in the early of modern times and works. Works in the early of modern times were mostly published via magazines and newspapers, and due to this, writers` works were finally formed within mutual influences of publishing media. Even the progress of initial works of Yeom Sang-Seop was also influenced absolutely by such media. The work published via [Gaebyeok] was mutually influenced with media characteristics of magazine. Since then, the experience of Yeom to publish novel serially to [DongA Daily] effected much on the creation of [Gold Ring] and [Lobby of Investigation Bureau] published again on [Gaebyeok]. Overuse of Chinese characters and Japanism sentences which were shown on his initial works were mostly not shown on [Gold Ring] and [Lobby of Investigation Bureau]. Also, it can be said that the switch from detailed exploration to inner side to the concern to customs was made from his experience to such media including newspapers.
