Reinventing Democracy to Build a "Sustainable Society": A Practitioner`s View from Japan

A "sustainable society" needs the strong function of democracy. It seems that the essential power source for democracy and the market economy is economic "growth". It may be noted that there are moving from a "growth-driven society" to a "sustainable society". A "sustainable society" can internally solve social problems without relying on the power of economic growth. In a "sustainable society", there is development of "local party politics" and "generation conscious democracy " with the transparency of decision-making. It is at least conceivable that Japan needs to install or develop a "new type" of democracy. The new model of democracy is a sustainable society
