The Problem of Text Selection: Focused on the case of Gapja Appeal

Materials of textbooks realize the curriculum. Text have to be selected by achievement criteria of curriculum, learners` developmental level, schema of the text, and suitability or relevance of teaching and learning. There are many problems in teaching Gapja Appeal in the first or second year of middle school. The Gapja Appeal of the elder statesmen including Manri Choi has been criticized as an outdated opposition to creation of a new writing system. However in the appeal, the appellants insisted that the procedure of creation of a new writing system should not be done confidentially. With patriotism, they also worried about political, diplomatic, and educational impact that the creation of a new writing system may bring about and demanded careful treatment on the issues. Therefore, it is a fault to criticize the appeal in a negative way with ignoring its essence. The Gapja Appeal is the first document of the ideological language policy following a national ideologic perspective. The appeal shows a conflict between pragmatic national development and the elders` patriotism, but sincere and loyal advice of the appellants should not be distorted or despised. King Sejong and the elders both should be appreciated as the winners of devotion to their nation. For selecting a text, there should be close attention to balanced evaluation of historical characters whom should be evaluated from contemporary perspectives. The background of negative views on Gapja Appeal is due to a conflict between Hangeul and Hanja(Chinese writing). If the chinese writing system is appreciated as ancestors` system, not as a borrowing system, nationwide misunderstanding of Gapja Appeal will be resolved.
