본 연구는 일제강점기 인천에서 활약한 청년체육단체 한용단의 체육활동에 대하여 구체적으로 파악하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 한용단과 관련된 신문기사와 지방정부문서 등 관련문헌과 현재 인천의 향토사학자들의 구술 자료를 분석하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 한용단은 1919년 11월 13일에 결성된 순수 한국인으로 구성된 청년체육단체였다. 한용단은 민족정신을 중심으로 창단된 종합체육 단체로 대외적 활동은 야구가 중심이었다. 1922년 전인천야구대회에 출천한 한용단은 동지회(同志會)와의 결승경기 중 심판의 편파판정으로 인하여 우승을 놓치게 되었고 이에 인천시민들이 격분, 충돌사고로 이어져 해체되고 말았다. 스포츠를 통해 일제에 저항한 한용단은 당시 인천시민들에게 스포츠 영웅이었다. 한용단의 체육사적 의미는 애국심이 중심이 된 지방 최초의 청년체육단체였다는 것이다.

This study has the purpose of understanding the physical training activity of Hanyongdan, a youth physical training group, which worked in Incheon during Japanese ruling era. It analyzed newspapers, local government documents and verbal data of local historians of Incheon. The result of this study is as follows. Hanyongdan was a youth sports club which was established on November 13, 1919 purely by Koreans. It was a comprehensive sports club. Its main external activity was baseball. Hanyongdan participated in Incheon baseball tournament in 1922 but couldn`t win the championship because of the umpires biased judgment when they competed with Dongji team at the final game. Incheon citizens were furious about it and made some clash accidents. As a result, Hanyongdan had to be disbanded. Even though Hanyongdan was disbanded due to the shameful incident, the team players were heroes to the Incheon citizens that resisted against the Japanese rulers through the sports. It is meaningful in the history of physical training that Hanyongdan was the first youth physical training group with the central idea of patriotism.
