``같은 뜻이 겹쳐서 된 말``을 ``겹말`` 이라고 한다. ``겹말``에는 다양한 유형들이 있지만, 이 중 가장 큰 비중을 차지하는 것은 한자어와 고유어가 결합한 것이다. 대개 겹말은 비문법적이어서 사용해서는 안 되는 것으로 취급되고 있지만, 최근에는 겹말 구성을 문법적으로 설명하여 겹말을 사용해도 무방하다는 주장을 펴기도 한다. 그동안 겹말의 생성 원인으로는 한자어의 의미가 약화되어 이를 강화하기 위해 고유어를 결합하는 것으로 보는 견해가 일반적이었다. 그러나 대부분의 겹말을 분석해 보면 원한자어의 의미가 정확하게 인식되는 경우가 많아 의미를 강화하기 위해 겹말을 생성하게 되었다고 보기는 어렵다. 이보다는 고유어의 특정한 패턴을 유지하기 위해 겹말을 만들어 사용하는 것으로 생각된다. 합성어의 경우에는 고유어로 된 유개념을 중심으로 선행 요소에 종개념을 교체해 가며 특정한 어휘군을 형성하다가 종개념과 유개념을 하나로 아우르는 한자어가 등장하면서 불안정한 어휘 체계를 극복하기 위해 결국 한자어가 하나의 종개념처럼 행동을 하며 고유어와 결합하여 겹말을 만드는 것으로 볼 수 있고, 구와 절의 경우에는 고정 요소와 교체 요소가 결합하는 정형화된 표현에서 이 두 요소가 하나의 단어로 개념화하면서 다시 이 개념화된 단어가 교체 요소로 적용되면서 겹말이 생성되는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 이처럼 겹말이 나름대로의 문법적인 동기를 가지고 있고 의미의 반복을 문법적으로 오류로 규정할 수 없으므로 겹말의 사용을 부정적으로 보는 견해는 합리적이라 할 수 없다.

There are many types of pleonasms in Koeran words, phrases and clauses. Among them, the combination of Sino-Korean and native Korean word takes a large proportion. Some people assert that pleonasms aren`t grammatical, but I don`t agree to it. Because it is natural for many people to use pleonasms in terms of following a particular pattern, which is traditional and general. Many researches asserted that the generation of pleonasms have been caused by weakening of Sino-Korean`s meaning. They asserted that people becamed to use pleonasms to overcome the weakening of Sino-Korean`s meaning and to strengthen the meaning of Sino-Korean. But it is not true. Because the most of Sino-Korean didn`t experience the weakening of meaning. So I assert that the generation of pleonasms have been caused by following native patterns, which is devided into compound word pattern and phrase or clause pattern. And I assert that repeating of same meaning isn`t ungrammartical. Because repeating of same meaning rather emphasize the meaning of the word.
