현대사회의 자원봉사활동은 더 이상 노력의 단순 기부 활동이 아닌 기부참여자의 연령, 직업, 기능 등에 따라 참여의 동기와 참여의 방식이 분화되는 특징을 보이고 있다. 그러나 중·고등 교육과정에 도입한 의무적인 자원봉사활동 참여제도에도 불구하고 자원봉사활동이 대학시기를 거쳐 성인기에 이르기까지 이러한 분화를 거쳐 지속적인 활동으로 자리 잡는 경우는 많지 않다. 이는 자원봉사활동의 분화에 따르는 자발성 요인, 봉사자에 대한 관리체계, 봉사자에게 주어지는 보상체계에 대한 면밀한 분석이 미흡하기 때문이다. 본 논문은 이러한 분화된 활동 중 봉사주체의 자발성과 전문성에 입각하여 본격적인 자원봉사활동이 이루어질 수 있는 집단으로 대학생을 설정하고 이들의 자원봉사활동 활성화를 위한 기초적인 환경을 분석하였다. 특히 관심의 대상인 예술계 대학생들은 전체 대학생 집단 중 전공자 비율에서 적지 않은 비중을 차지하면서도 자원봉사 참여율이 매우 낮은 경향을 보이는데 이러한 특성은 사회구성원으로 하여금 예술가들이 사회적으로 기여도가 낮은 집단으로 인식하게끔 한다는 점에서 그 원인을 파악하고 대안을 모색하는 것은 중요하다, 본 연구에서는 대학생 404명을 대상으로 예술계 전공 대학생들과 전체 대학생들의 봉사활동 동기와 특성을 비교하고 봉사학습으로서의 체계적인 교과목 설계의 필요성을 제시한다.

The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristic of volunteering of arts college students. Arts college students are the least represented group of major to actively participate in college year volunteering. They are acknowledged as lacking motivation to partake in the social action. The actual national data base on volunteering would also show a lower rate of participation by arts major students in regards to their portion in whole university student population. This study aims to uncover the motivation, incentives, and specific environment in order to induce more participation of arts major students in volunteering. The study has analyzed 404 university students(among which 66 students are arts college students). Statistical tools were ANOVA, independent t-test, and chi-square analysis. Findings of the analysis is as follows: First, arts college students are easy to be put in a situation choosing between volunteering and taking side jobs related to their specialty. Second, arts college students tend to more relate their volunteering activities with their future careers. Third, arts college students would derive more meaning from personal fulfillment of volunteering rather than social meaning. Forth, students in general expressed more need to be assisted with their volunteering activities by faculty, mentor, or any type of professional organizer.
