<최고운전>은 야래자설화와 지하대적퇴치설화를 조합·적용하여 창작해낸 소설 작품이다. 작가는 신성한 영웅의 출현을 의미하는 야래자설화와 훼손된 기존 질서를 재건하는 의미를 갖고 있는 지하대적퇴치설화를 조합하여 웅대한 포부와 능력을 갖고 있던 최치원이 결국 실패할 수밖에 없었음을 문학적으로 형상화해냈다. 야래자설화는 현 세계의 기존 질서와는 다른 이질적 질서가 현 세계에 끼어들어와 이질적 질서를 구현하는 이야기이다. 새롭게 구현될 질서는 태어난 자식이 왕조 또는 가문을 건설하는 것으로 구체화된다. 이렇게 야래자설화는 뭔가가 ``와서`` 의미 있는 뭔가를 ``준다``는 것이 핵심이다. 지하대적퇴치설화는 당대 질서를 어지럽히는 대적을 제거하는 영웅의 이야기이다. 이 영웅은 당대 사회를 위협하는 이질적인 존재를 퇴치하여, 도전받는 기존 질서를 회복하고 공고히 하는 역할을 한다. 영웅은 새로운 질서를 창출하는 것이 아니라 기존의 질서를 재건, 회복하는 기능을 함으로써 궁극적으로 기존 질서에 편입한다. 이렇게 끝나는 지하대적퇴치설화는 결국, 뭔가가 ``어지럽힌 것``을 다시 ``되돌리는`` 이야기인 셈이다. 작가는 야래자설화에서 새로운 질서를 구현할 영웅의 출현을 의미하는 신이한 탄생으로 최치원의 탄생을 그려내고, 지하대적퇴치설화에서 기존 질서에 도전하는 존재의 퇴치 과정을 통해 최치원의 본질적 패퇴를 그려냈다. 이렇게 작가는 두 개의 설화를 겹쳐냄으로써 미묘하고 다양한 목소리를 지닌 작품을 창조해냈고, 분명하고 명확한 의미지향을 가진 설화와 구별되는, 소설의 소설다움을 성취해냈다.

ChoiGoWoonCheon(崔孤雲傳) was created by mixing and appling folklores. The tale of slaying underground monster(地下大賊退治說話) and the tale of Yaraeja(夜來者說話) were mixed in ChoiGoWoonCheon. So, ChoiGoWoonCheon had a ambiguousness as a novel. The tale of Yaraeja had a meaning that a superior hero was born and finally he created new order and system. The tale of slaying underground monster is different. This tale had a meaning that a hero defeat the monster. This monster throw a trouble into existing order and system. Eventually the tale of slaying underground monster is conflict with the tale of Yaraeja. The writer of ChoiGoWoonCheon had a excellent ability to compound two different tales. As a result, ChoiGoWoonCheon had a story and meaning that ChoiChiWon(崔致遠) had a big and great vision and he pursuit to realize his vision, but he had defeated by ruler of existing order. Because he was not only a son of Yaraeja but also a slaying underground monster. The writer created a work with mixing and appling two different sources, he made a novel worthy of the name.
