유교사회에서 군자의 ``처사(處士)``는 ``출사(出仕)``와 마찬가지로 해당 정치권력의 정당성 여부를 판단하는 중요한 척도이다. 그런데 지금까지 조선시대 ``처사``의 대표인물인 남명(南冥) 조식(曺植, 1501-1572)에 대해 그의 ``처사``적 위상이 지니는 정치적 의의에 대한 적극적인 검토가 미흡했다. 이에 본 논문은 남명의 ``처사적 정치참여의 위상``을 검토하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 유교사상사에서 차지하는 ``처사``의 개념사적 논의를 행하였다. 이를 통해 적어도 유교사상사에서 ``처사``는 정치적 은둔자가 아니라 본질적으로 강력한 정치적 저항 내지 비판으로서의 정치참여 행위였다는 점을 규명하였다. 다음으로 남명의 처사적 삶은 이러한 유교적 교의의 충실한 실천이었음을 논증하였다. 즉 남명의 처사로서의 삶은 자신과 정치적인 소신을 함께 하지 못하는 정권, 곧 겸선(兼善)하지 못하는 정권에 대한 정치적 비판 및 저항의 의사표현이자 저항의지의 실천이었다. 그것은 정치적 은둔이 아니었다. 올바른 정치 구현을 위해 그는, 재야에서, 평생토록 정치적 비판과 제안을 행하였으며, 정치적 후진 양성을 위해 일생을 바쳤다. 그는 ``처사``로서의 ``적극적인 정치적 삶``을 살았다.

In a Confucianism based society, Cheosa (處士: not serving the power) of the Great Man is an important criterion to judge the legitimacy of the power of the relevant age like Chulsa (出仕: serving the power). Till today, however, it has not been positive enough to review the political meaning of the position of Cheosa of Nam-myeong Cho Sik (1501-1572) living in Chosun Dynasty. In this study, therefore, I reviewed the position of his involvement in politics as a Cheosa. For this objective, I first looked into the conceptional history of Cheosa in the ideological history of Confucianism. As a result, I recognized that Cheosa in the ideological history of Confucianism was not a hermit but a behavior of political involvement as a strong political resistance and criticism essentially. Then, I recognized that his life as a Cheosa was the expression of his intention for political criticism and resistance against the power that did not go with his political idea, which meant the power did not make the others good as well as the power itself. It was not a political eremitism. In order to realize a righteous politics, he had made political criticism and suggestion through all his life and devoted his life to bringing up his political successors. That is, he lived a positive political life as a Cheosa.
