Toni Morrison`s Song of Solomon is a novel of initiation which deals with Milkman`s maturation. This paper follows Milkman`s route to the South, and investigates three places and what he discovers in those places. Milkman who is selfish and indifferent lives in Flint, Michigan, and departs for Danville, Pennsylvania, to look for gold which he thinks would emancipate him from his father`s interference. In Danville, he is told about his family history which was the pride of its inhabitants. His grandfather was the model to neighboring farmers. Milkman becomes interested in his family`s history. Not finding gold in Danville, Milkman goes to Shalimar, Virginia, which isn`t a real city. During his stay in Shalimar, Milkman discovers his great-grandfather`s life story. He also experiences bobcat hunting which enables Milkman to realize that he is no longer alienated from the earth nor from his fellow human beings. He now understands his family and friends` situations and sorrows. Milkman`s search for gold turns into his quest for identity.
