사이시옷 표기는 매우 역사가 깊은 표기 방식이다. 사이시옷 표기는 1933년 한글 마춤법 통일안 제정 이래 1988년 현행 한글 맞춤법이 제정되기까지 조금씩 내용을 달리하며 내용를 구체화해 왔는데, 현재 이 규정을 제대로 이해하고 규정을 준수하는 사람은 많지 않다. 그만큼 많은 문제점을 안고 있기 때문이다. 사이시옷 규정과 관련된 문제점으로는 첫째, ``위# N, 뒤 #N``과 같은 구 구성에서 사이시옷을 표기하는 문제를 들 수 있는데, 많은 사람들이 오류를 보이므로 이를 해결하기 위해 ``윗, 뒷``을 관형사로 인정하거나 일부 구 구성에서 사이시옷 표기를 인정하는 방안을 생각해 볼 수 있다. 둘째, 새로운 도로명에 사이시옷을 표기하지 않는다는 원칙에 문제가 있는데, 규정에 맞게 사이시옷을 적도록 하든지 규정을 일부 수정하여 새 도로명에는 사이시옷을 적지 않는다는 내용을 명시할 필요가 있다. 셋째, ``-님``이 결합하는 파생어의 경우 음이 삽입되는 양상을 보이는데, 표준 발음으로는 음의 삽입을 인정하지 않지만 음의 삽입을 인정하고 사이시옷 표기의 취지를 살려 이 경우에 사이시옷을 표기하는 방안을 검토해볼 필요가 있다. 넷째, 한자어의 사이시옷 표기와 관련해서는 현행 규정에서 6개의 한자어만 예외적으로 사이시옷을 적을 수 있도록 하였지만, ``차(茶), 차례(茶禮)``와 같이 단어의 어종(語種)이 불분명한 경우와 ``헛간(虛間)``과 같이 형태론적 분석이 어려운 경우가 있으므로 한자어에 사이시옷을 적는 문제에 대해서 구체적인 재검토가 필요하다. 다섯째, 외래어에 사이시옷을 표기하는 문제에 대해서 많은 사람들이 궁금해하고 혼란을 일으키고 있는데, 사이시옷 표기의 근본적인 취지를 살려 외래어가 포함된 합성어에 사이시옷을 적는 문제에 대해서도 심도 있는 논의가 필요하다.

Sayisiot is a notation with a long history. So it seems highly irregular shape and different aspects. Therefore it is difficult to briefly explain the usage of saisiot. But It is very important to accurately use saisiot. And it is necessary to close the gap between theory and practice. First, in phrase structures the errors of saisiot should be reduced. To this end we should found the way of regally inscribing ``uit`` or ``tuit``, combination of ``ui + t`` or ``tui + t``. Second, currently it isn`t allowed representation sayisiot in the new road name on the basis of phrase structures, but actually it isn`t true, so we should decide one way between saisiot notation or execption in regulation. Third, in the case of derivative, especially when combined with native language suffix as a ``-nim``, some sound is inserted. So it is necessary to approve a sound insert and carefully review permission of saisiot in some derivative. Fourth, In Sino-Korean words except 6 exceptions saisiot isn`t allowed, but actually it isn`t kept by many Korean native speakers. And in the case of words as ``cha, charae`` it is difficult to for us to judge its correct word types. And in the case of ``h□tkan`` there is an error of morphological analysis. Finally, we should review saisiot regulation about loanwords. The National Institute of the Korean Language interprete that it is impossible to mark saisiot on loanwords for no related information. But it isn`t likely to consider this case, so we review saisiot regulation about loanwords.
