매년 약 24% 가량의 학생선수들이 운동부에서 탈락되며, 전체 학생선수 중 직업 운동선수가 되는 비율은 10%를 넘지 못하는 것이 현실이다. 즉 90% 정도의 학생선수는 중도에 탈락된다는 것이다. 운동이라는 외길인생을 살아 온 학생선수들이 운동에서 탈락되면 이들은 다시 학생으로 적응하는데 어려움을 경험하게 된다. 그러나 현재까지 이들에 대한 교육적 방안은 구체적으로 논의되지 못하고 있다. 또한 한 집단의 ``중도탈락`` 현상은 그 집단의 구조적 맥락을 드러내 주는 핵심 현상이라는 측면에서 이에 대한 연구가 요구된다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 양과 질의 혼합 연구를 통해 중도탈락 현상을 살펴보고, 첫째, 중도탈락의 원인 및 그 특성을 제시하고, 둘째, 이를 통해 학교 운동부의 구조적 문제 및 이에 대한 대안적 방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 조사 대상자들의 탈락 시점, 탈락 결정자, 탈락 시 상담자 등을 밝히며, 중도탈락 과정의 일반적인 특성을 살펴보았다. 둘째, 운동탈락 요인을 범주화하고 이에 대한 동의도를 알아 본 결과, 중고등학교 중도탈락 학생선수들은 운동내적, 운동외적, 개인내적, 개인외적 요인에 대해 각각 2.57, 1.71, 2.42, 1.71의 동의도를 보였다. 셋째, 면담 결과를 중심으로, 탈락 요인들의 특성을 살펴본 결과, 운동탈락 요인은 직접적(표면적) 요인과 간접적(내면적) 요인으로 나타났다. 이상의 연구 결과를 토대로, 학습, 지원, 구조의 측면에서 학교 운동부 및 중도탈락 현상의 구조적 문제를 살펴보았으며, 이에 대한 개선방안을 제안하였다.

24% of all student athletes every year were dropped, in addition to, the degree that professional player became was only 10%. That is, 90% of all student athletes were dropped. If student athletes that have been lived in situation of ``one way process`` were dropped, they were compelled to experience the difficult of adaptation as student. However, the domain of research didn`t discuss concretely about educational ways. And, the phenomena in relation to the dropped showed a structural context of the group, accordingly, researches of the theme were needed to explore vigorously. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to, first, find dropped causes of drop-out student athletes and its traits, second, propose structural problem of school athletic club and alternative ways to solve the problem. The results are as followings. First, the general traits as like, the time when was dropped, the person by whom was made a decision, the person with whom advised were provided. Second, the result that confirmed the degree of agreement about dropped causes was showed with athletic-in cause (2.57), athletic-out cause (1.71), individual-in cause (2.42), individual-out cause (1.71). And, third, the structure between of dropped causes was showed as directed causes and indirected causes. And, I explored the structural problem of the club and the phenomena with perspective of ``study``, ``support``, ``structure``, lastly, I suggested alternative ways of them.
