Kim, Jong-sam is evaluated as a poet who constructed a unique modernistic world of poetry after the Korean war. His poems strongly reveal aesthetic properties based on music. The poet pursued a consonance of the domains of both poetry and music, craving for the absolute purity of music. The reason he indulged in music is that music not only establishes one`s internal and mental order, but it also serves as a realm that lets one experience the sincerity of existence. He sought to induce a poetic sentiment through the method of counterpoint that contrasted reality with fantasy. Especially, he experimented a possible combination of music and poetry by effectively utilizing the mode of a fugue characterized by imitation and repetition. Extreme ellipsis and condensation provided a source that made his poems a space full of imagination and fantasy. Death that frequently appears in his works was the kind of death as a yearning for a perfect beauty by which existence is consummated. To the poet, music and poetry as well as beauty and death are not separated entities, but denotations that convey the identical implications.
