최근 사회적으로 생태주의 가치를 갖고 이를 자녀 양육 및 가정살림, 시민행동의 차원까지 실행하는 주부이자 엄마인 에코맘이 등장하고 있다. 이 연구는 이러한 에코맘이 어떤 과정을 통해 형성되었지 밝히는 것을 주요한 목적으로 삼는다. 질문에 대한 답을 찾기 위해 질적 연구의 생애사 방법을 사용했으며, 일곱 명의 제보자를 선정해 심층면담을 실시하고 이를 분석했다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 제보자들이 에코맘으로 형성되고 성숙되는 과정에는 중요한 삶의 경험이 있었다. 이는 삶을 살아가면서 만나게 되는 사건으로 시작되는데, 이 사건은 성찰과 반성이라는 내부적 요소를 거치면서 제보자에게 의미 있는 경험으로 받아들여졌다. 그리고 이러한 경험은 사고와 행동의 변화를 이끌었다. 둘째, 제보자의 의미 있는 경험은 사회, 가정, 개인 영역의 다양한 배경적 요소가 서로 영향을 미치고, 복합적으로 작용한 결과다. 에코맘으로의 형성 과정은 경험을 통한 학습, 전환을 통한 학습으로 이해할 수 있다. 앞으로 환경교육은 학습자들이 의미 있는 경험을 할 수 있도록 다양한 사회적 환경을 조성하는 한편, 생태주의적 가치를 함양하고 성찰적 능력을 제고할 수 있도록 교육내용을 구성해야 할 것이다.

Recently, the advent of EcoMoms has taken place: women who are not only moms but also housekeepers who raise children and act as citizens based on ecological values. This study aims to identify the processes in which EcoMoms have been formed. In order to find out the answers to this research question, this study employed a methodology of life history, carried out in-depth interviews of seven informants and analyzed the data. Research results are as follows. First, there were decisive events in life that formed and developed EcoMoms. These decisive events happened by accident but became meaningful experiences deriving changes in their ideas and values through personal reflection and selfexamination processes. Secondly, meaningful experiences of the informants resulted from interactions and combinations of various factors of social, family and personal backgrounds. The formation process of the EcoMom is as a process of learning by doing and a process of learning through transformation. This implies that environmental education is required to create various social environment on the one hand. On the other hand, it is necessary to configurate educational contents and curricula in order to foster ecological values and the reflective capacity of learners.
