설총 관련 구전설화는 3편에 불과하다. 그런데 『홍유후실기』 소재 문헌설화를 발굴하여 내용을 분류해 보면 ① 출생담, ② 성장담, ③ 공적담, ④ 인물담, ⑤ 사후담으로 나눌 수 있어, 이미 알려진 역사적 사실은 물론 설총의 생애를 좀 더 구체적이고 종합적으로 재구할 수 있다. 『홍유후실기』라는 새로운 자료를 바탕으로 내용을 파악해 본 결과 弘儒侯가 이두를 표준화하고 처음으로 국학을 세운 사실과 「花王戒」를 지었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 미상으로 언급해 왔던 몰년(沒年)을 『홍유후실기』를 기초로 하여 655년(태종2)에 출생하여 743년(경덕왕2)에 타계한 것으로 확정할 수 있었다. 『홍유후실기』를 바탕으로 설총의 캐릭터적 성격을 살펴본 결과 학자와 관리로서 개혁적인 사유를 선구적으로 실천하였다는 점, 모태불교인이었지만 통일 이후 새로운 시대를 열어가는 정치사회적인 요구에 부응하기 위하여 과감히 유학을 도입하고 국학을 설립하는 등 개혁적인 사고를 실천한 점, 남들이 생각하지도 못했던 鄕札을 시류에 맞게 통일신라의 언어로 통일하고 교육하는 창의성을 발휘한 점을 주목하지 않을 수 없었다. 이를 바탕으로 본 연구자는 설총의 캐릭터적 성격을 한 마디로 "개혁적이고 창의적 안목을 가진 신지식인"이라고 요약할 수 있었다.

Historic writings about Seolchong(薛聰) are only Samkugsagi(三國史記) yeoljeon, Samkugyusa(三國遺事) weonhyobulgi, and Koryeosa(高麗史) Hyeonjong. Oral narratives about Seolchong are only birth place narrative, Buldanggog(佛堂谷) narrative and Wangjai(왕재) narrative. It is impossible to characterize Seolchong by these historic writings and oral narratives. And then it is worthy of notice that there are several narratives in 『Hongyuhoosilgi』pubiished by Sunchang seolssi(순창설씨) family. The first half of 『Hongyuhusilgi』 is Seolchong`s chronicles. And there are 18 historical materials, 1 Confucian shrine material, 20 memorial service materials, and 4 burial ground materials. The second half of 『Hongyuhusilgi』is Seolgonggeom (설공검) brothers`s chronicles as Seolchong`s 21 descendants. Written narrative for Seolchong in 『Hongyuhusilgi』 are classified into five articles－①birth narrative, ②growth narrative, ③achievement narrative, ④person narrative, ⑤after death narrative. Until now value for Seolchong are special birth between Weonhyodaisa (元曉大師) and Yoseokgongju(瑤石公主), compilation all the Idu(吏讀), establishing the public school. But it is poor to examine closely what is Seolchong`s character. According to written narrative for Seolchong in 『Hongyuhusilgi』, Seolchong`s characteristics are excellent ability as a scholar and a government official, introduction of confucianism establishing the public school for solving the social problems, and creative arrangement of Idu letter. Conclusionally Seolchong is culture hero with the practical, creative, and wise disposition.
