교육은 시대의 변천에 따라 교육에 대한 사회적 요구가 변화하면서 그 형태가 변화하여 왔다. 현 시대는 전지구화, 지식기반사회, 학습사회의 시대로 교육의 변화를 요청하고 있으며 전통적 학교교육은 이 같은 시대변화를 수용하지 못하고 있다. 이에 따라 새로운 교육형태가 요청되고 있으며 그것이 바로 평생교육이다. 이 시대는 전통적 학교교육 패러다임으로부터 평생교육패러다임으로 변화가 이루어지고 있다. 학교교육 패러다임은 교육학이라는 학문의 정체성 부족, 교육제도의 경직성과 폐쇄성, 획일성, 학습자의 수동성 조장 등으로 인하여 많은 문제점을 드러내고 있다. 반면에 평생교육 패러다임은 학교를 포함하는 총체적 교육현상에 대한 탐구가 가능하여 교육학 발전에 기여 할 수 있으며, 평생교육 제도는 다양성, 융통성, 학습자의 요구에 적극적으로 대응하며 전 생애에 걸친 학습을 보장 할 수 있다. 또한, 평생학습은 학습자의 자유롭고 주체적인 학습을 가능하게 하고, 학습자간의 네트워크를 통한 학습, 시민의식의 신장, 학습공동체 형성이 가능하다. 평생교육 패러다임은 이제 출발시점에 서 있으며 형성의 초기단계에 있으므로 바람직한 형태의 평생교육 패러다임의 정립을 위해서는 관련 주체의 적극적인 노력이 요구된다.

Education had been changed according to change of needs due to change of a period. Globalization, knowledge based society and learning society is characteristic of this era and these are demand educational change, but traditional education system can not fill up this needs. Due to this we need new education system like lifelong education system. This era the education system convert from the traditional education system to the lifelong education system. The traditional education system has many defect for example as a sort of study, rigidity and uniformity as social system and promote passiveness of learner`s. Contrast to this lifelong education system has many strong point for example it can promote learner`s self directed learning, development of learning network among learners and support to formation of learning community. Now is starting point to making the lifelong education systems accordingly we must endeavor for this.
