목욕문화와 온천이라는 주제를 다루는 본 연구는"한·일간의 문화 확산과 관광문화의 역사"의 공적영역의 접점에 초점을 맞추어 일상생활과 인간의 문화사회적 측면을 살펴보면서, 양국 간의 문화관광 공간의 확산적 변화과정에 대해 주목하였다. 특히 목욕이라는 신체를 정화하는 한정된 공간내의 활동이 어떻게 생산과 소비의 공간인 대중목욕과 문화관광적 레져가 가능한 온천장으로 변하게 되었는지에 대해 비교 서술적 인자를 도출 하였다. 공간의 확산과정을 설명하는 요인들은 헤거스트란드의 장소확산 이론을 도입하여 인간의 행태적 행위가목욕문화로서 전파, 확산되어가는 과정을 고찰하였다. 그 결과 공중목욕이 터부시 되었던 근대 이전의 시대를 거치면서 인간의 활동 영역이 극대화되어 활동영역이 변화하였으며, 더 나아가 어떻게 온천관광지로서 관광활동영역을 창출하였는지에 대해 확인 할 수 있었다.

This research on bathing culture and spas focuses mainly on the history of Korea and Japan s cultural and tourism expansion. It high lights the change in the two countries cultural tourism by taking a look at the change in peoples daily lives and social aspects. This research explains how a simple bath, the act of cleansing and purifying the body, developed into a spa, a public leisure activity in which people bathe in a communal fashion. If the development and modernization of a site is viewed as a process of spatial diffusion of a tourism attraction, then the concept of the spread of innovation and reform and the behavior of travel can be actualized in the diffusion of cultures and the behavioral customs of humankind. Recent research confirms the connections between these factors. The most noticeable connector states that the primary characteristics are concerned with humankinds movement and change, diffusion, adaptation to new environments, and relationship with neighbors. The theory that relates to factors of spatial diffusion, based on Hgerstrands place diffusion theory, examines the spread of the bathing behavior. As a result, one can conclude that the act of bathing that existed long before the modern age underwent a transformation, resulting in an area where the concept of tourism was created. The scope of this research describes the comparison between different aspects of Korea and Japans spas from the late1880s, considered to be Koreas modernization period, to the 1940s, based on historical documents related to bath and spa tourism.
