``귤의 고장``제주라는 명칭은 고려시대부터 정착한 이래 오늘날에도 이어지고 있다. 제주의 감귤재배가 전근대사회와 현대사회에 있어서 서로 여러 면에 큰 차이가 있다고 손치더라도, 조선시대 국가 관할의 제주 果園은 제주가``귤의 고장``으로서 역사적 연원이 깊음을 여실히 드러내는 핵심적 인자로서 오늘날에 와서도 그 흔적을 제주도내 도처에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 이에 제주는``귤의 고장``관련 인문·자연환경적 요소를 통합해 이를 매개로 지역개발도 꾀하는 문화권정비사업을 벌일만하며, 그 활용대상의 역사·문화·생태자원으로는 조선시대 국가 관할의 제주 과원이 가장 유효·적절하다고 하겠다. 구체적인 방안으로서는 조선시대 제주 과원의 모습을 원래대로 복원·정비하는 한편, 이를 생태공원으로 조성하는 일이 가장 먼저 이루어져야 할 것이다. 이와 더불어, 그 과원이 지닌 의미 파악이 철저히 선행되어야 보다 더 현실적이고, 효용성이 큰 활용 방향을 전망·제시할 수 있음을 유의해야 할 것이다.

The title of The Home of Tangerine for Jeju has been in place to date since it put down roots during the Koryo Dynasty. Even if there are big differences in tangerine cultivation between premodern and modern times in many ways, the existence of tangerine orchards which were operated under the government control during the Chosun Dynasty shows the origin of the designation dates back the long history, and the traces of them are found throughout the island. On the basis of it, it is worthwhile to undertake the task of organizing cultural spheres with the theme of the home of tangerine so as to promote the local development with this plan as a medium. Jeju orchards are thought to be the most effective and proper as its object choice for their historical, cultural and ecological resources. Specifically, the first thing to be done is to restore and maintain the appearance of Jeju orchards to their original state and then to develop them into an ecological park. But, the significance the orchards represent should be thoroughly grasped beforehand so that more realistic and practical application can be projected and suggested.
