본 연구의 목적은 한국 장로교 총회 조직에 대한 감사와 기념으로 중국 산동성의 중국인들에게 복음을 전할 선교사들을 파송하기로 결정한 1912년 이후 백년 동안의 한국 교회의 타문화권 선교 역사의 시기 구분하는 것이다. 한국 교회의 타문화 선교 역사의 시기 구분하였던 박기호, 김활영, 이정순, 김영남, 손승호 등의 이전 연구들을 살펴보았다. 이 연구들은 특정 국가에 국한하여 시기 구분을 하였거나, 기계적으로 시기를 나누었거나, 최근 20년의 역사를 제대로 담아내지 못하였다. 따라서 한국 교회의 타문화권 선교 역사를 보다 잘 이해하도록 돕는 시기 구분이 필요하다. 본 연구는 시기 구분을 위해 1) 한국 교회의 성장, 2) 한국 선교 단체의 출현과 성장, 3) 한국 선교사의 양적 증가, 4) 선교지의 확대, 5) 한국 경제의 발전, 6) 한국의 국내 정치 및 외교의 변화 등을 각 시기의 주요 성격을 탐색하고 형성하는 요인들로 선택하였다. 본 연구는 한국 교회의 타문화권 선교 역사를 다섯 시기로 구분하였다. 제 1기는 태동기로 1912년부터 1955년까지 중국 산동성 선교로 요약된다. 제 2 기는 개척기로 1955년부터 1970년까지 소수의 선교사들의 아세아권 선교로 요약된다. 제 3기는 도약기로 1971년부터 1989년까지 선교사, 선교 국가, 선교 단체의 급격한 증가로 요약된다. 제 4기는 팽창기로 1990년부터 2000년까지 폭발적 증가로 요약된다. 제 5기는 성숙기로 2001년부터 현재까지이며 국제화 등의 질적인 성숙으로 요약된다.

Year 2011 is the one hundredth year of the cross-cultural missions of the Korean church. To celebrate the formation of the general assembly of Korean Presbyterian Church, the general assembly wholeheartedly decided to send cross-cultural missionaries to China. The missionaries sent by Korean Presbyterian Church preached the gospel of Jesus, planted churches and carried out medical mission among the Chinese for more than 40 years. Today, there are 22,014 Korean missionaries in almost every corner of the earth. However, there are relatively few studies on the history of the missions of the Korean church. A few have studied on this subject and, yet, their studies were based on particular fields or people. In doing so, they divided the history of the missions of the Korean church into periods. In this study, I suggest a number of variables for the periodization of the history of the cross-cultural missions of the Korean church. I, then, divide the history into five periods: 1) 1912~1955, 2) 1955~1970, 3) 1971~1989, 4) 1990~2000, and 5) 2001~present.
