『임원경제지』편찬 배경의 하나는 농학(農學)을 가학(家學)으로 삼은 집안내력이다. 농서 편찬에 접근하는 인식태도, 농서 편찬의 기본 방침의 측면에서 가학의 깊은 영향관계를 찾을 수 있다. 두 번째 배경은 18세기말 정조(正祖)의``농서대전(農書大全)``편찬 추진이다. 수리(水利)와 농기(農器)에 대한 관심이라는 점에서 정조와 서유구는 공통의 인식을 갖고 있었다. 세 번째로 홍만선(洪萬選)이 편찬한『산림경제(山林經濟)』가『임원경제지』편찬에 커다란 영향을 끼쳤다. 마지막으로 서유구 자신의 농사 체험을 편찬 배경으로 지목할 수 있다. 서유구가 직접 농사를 수행한 경험담 또는 간접적으로 농사를 감독하던 견문 등을『임원경제지』편찬 배경으로 볼 수 있다. 서유구는「본리지(本利志)」에서 농법(農法) 변통론을 제시하고 있었다. 농서를 편찬하면서 농법(農法) 체계화에 대한 나름대로의 입장을 정리하였다. 그는 조선농법의 고유한 특성만 강조하는 풍토만능론에서 벗어나 있었다. 그리하여 중국 농법의 선진적인 부분을 적극적으로 수용하면서, 조선 농법의 독특한 부분을 지속적으로 발전시키고, 또한 조선 팔도 지역농법의 독자성을 인정하고 활발한 개발을 주창하였다. 경법(耕法)의 경우에 전형적으로 그의 농법체계화에 대한 입장이 나타나 있는데, 중국 농서에서 기경(起耕)의 기본적인 원리를 소개하고, 이어서 조선 기경법의 지역적인 차이를 분명하게 정리한 다음, 조선 팔도 각 지역의 기경법의 차이를 분별하고 있었다. 또한 도맥이모작(稻麥二毛作), 도종(稻種)의 정리 등에서도 마찬가지로 논리를 전개하여 농법 변통론을 제시하고 있었다. 그는 농법을 변통하는 것에 멈추지 않고 이를 널리 보급시키기 위해 둔전경영론 속에 농법보급을 가능하게 하는 방안을 마련해놓고 있었다. 서유구의 농법(農法) 변통론은 농업기술의 기본원리의 정리, 구체적인 지역적인 농업기술의 특색 파악, 그리고 새로운 농법의 보급방안 등으로 이어지는 것이었고, 이는 또한 중국, 조선의 농법 성격을 바탕으로 전개된 것이었다.

The first background of Imwon Gyeongjeji was family`s learning, as which Dalseong Seo family had regarded agriculture. Seo, Yugu`s grandfather and father had a strong influence on his compiling of Imwon Gyeongjeji. The second was Jeongjo`s project of the compilation of a Nongseodaejeon. Jeongjo and Seo, Yugu shared the same understanding about Joseon agriculture that utilization of water and agricultural implements are most important factors in development of Joseon agriculture. Thirdly SanlimGyeongjae compiled by Hong, Manseon had an effect on Seo, Yugu. Last his direct or indirect experiences on farming also were one of the background of Imwon Gyeongjeji. Seo had his own standpoint of compilation of Imwon Gyeongjeji. First of all he got out of narrow viewpoint stressing only on natural features of fatherland. He argued positive admission of China`s agricultural methods. And he emphasized on the distinctiveness of Joseon agricultural methods, what is more on the distinctiveness of Paldo agricultural methods. His purpose was blending China`s agricultural methods and Joseon agricultural methods, therefore made new effective agricultural methods. We could follow up his opinion in explaining of plowing, double-cropping of rice and vegetables, arrangement of rice species, etc. Seo, Yugu also had proposed the method of popularization of new effective agricultural methods into Joseon farmers.
