The MMORPG culture of Korea and China: Cultural standardization and the shaping of regional convergence culture in East Asia

The paper examines the effect of cultural standardization that leads to the rise of Korean online gaming industry in the global market. It provides a comparative perspective to study the competition ability that Korean gaming companies establish in their regional performance in East Asia. The paper first reviews the historical stages of cultural exchange between South Korea and China in the 2000s. Then the paper examines two cases that show the imitation production strategy adopted by Chinese game developers. The paper argues that Korean game developers play an important role in determining the type of online gaming product that is marketable in Asia`s regional market. Korean gaming industry is suggested to follow its development path with strong government support on IT policy to create healthy regional electronic economy. Korean game developers need to propose effective and innovative strategy to overcome regulatory barriers in order to enter various markets in East Asia.
