This paper intends to seek a way to make English definiteness and indefiniteness easily accessible to Korean learners of English─a parallel analysis of English and Korean forms of definiteness and indefiniteness. First, it makes a fine-grained characterization of English (in)definiteness within the framework of the Givenness Hierarchy, which co-relates between cognitive statuses of referents and their forms. The forms are hierarchically entailed as follows: this, that, this N > that N > the N > indefinite-this N > a N. Then the paper pursues an analysis of Korean (in)definite markers in a parallel manner with English markers. The markers show a similar hierarchically entailed relation as follows: i, ce N > ku N > ? N > han N, etten N > ? N, N with a numeral classifier. (Kyungnam University)
