질적 접근법을 통해서, 이 연구는 한국의 제3차 기관에서 영어 학습자의 자기 정체성 변화를 검토한다. 본 연구의 목적은 자기정체성의 유형 및 절차와 EFL(외국어로서의 영 어)이라는 맥락 속에서 영어 학습자에 의해서 경험된 협상을 더 깊이 이해하는데 있다. 동질적 표본으로 추출된 영어 통번역 전공자들과 함께 심층 면접하여, 다양한 형태의 자기정체성 변화가 발견되었다. 또한, 사회 정체성, 강요된 정체성, 중요한 다른 사람에 의해서 부여된 상상된 정체성의 역할은 그들의 영어 실력을 고려하는 새로운 정체성을 형성하는데 있어 간접적이지만 결정정인 기능을 한다.

Through a qualitative approach, this study examines the self-identity shifts of English language learners at a Korean tertiary institution. The purpose of this research is to gain a deeper understanding of the types of, and process of self-identity construction and negotiation experienced by English language students in the EFL context. From in-depth interviews with a homogenous sample of English Interpretation and Translation majors, various forms of self-identity shifts are identified. Furthermore, the role of social-identities, imposed identities, and imagined identities assigned by significant others plays an indirect, yet decisive function in forming new identities which take into account their English language skills.
