This study was done to learn how students perceive photography related courses and to utilize the found data to improve the quality that photography education can provide to the students. The specific objectives were, for each subject area: 1) How do male and female students differ in their perception? 2) How do first-time enrollers differ from students with more experience of the classes? The questionnaires were created based on 44 study topics within the six subject areas, which included Basic Theory, Mechanism, Digital Photography, Outdoor Photoshoot Exercise, Studio Photoshoot Exercise, and Applied Effects. The student analyzed for this study were visual design major students who were enrolled in at least one photography related course. The results showed that male students had higher perception level than female students. However, for Outdoor and Studio Photoshoot Exercises, female students exhibited higher perception level. The male students found theory, fundamentals, and conception more important while the female students put more importance on the hands-on training. First-time enrollers on average depicted higher perception level than students who have taken more than two courses. Yet, in Studio Photoshoot and Applied Effects, students with more experience exhibited higher perception level. The first result shows that students have strong desire for learning prior to enrolling into classes. Hence, the faculty needs to facilitate students to retain this strong motivation and apply it on their academic endeavors. The study found that realistic exercises and training must accompany the education of the basic fundamentals and mechanism. Also, the statistical data showed that professors need to devise and execute a specific plan to promote creativity, especially for Applied Effects, and the progress must be recorded and evaluated.
