Wordless picture books have been regarded as a great resource for children of all ages and all levels of English proficiency to support their language and literacy development. This case study sought to determine the utility of wordless picture books for a male Korean ESL child. The purpose of this study was to investigate the development a six-year-old male child`s literacy development in English over six weeks of using wordless picture books. The child`s narratives in response to these books three times a week were transcribed and analyzed in terms of the number of tokens, types, content words, and syllables. He was assessed regularly in terms of his vocabulary, reading, and writing abilities. A variety of data collecting techniques-interviewing, observation and official documents from his school-were used to monitor his progress. Results indicated remarkable language and literacy development over a relatively short period of time (six weeks). Noticeable changes included improvement in narrative ability, use of vocabulary, fluency in speaking English, word reading ability, and fluency and accuracy in writing English words. The findings of this study should encourage further research on wordless picture books for learners of English.
