이강백의 희곡 <들판에서>는 작가의 작품 가운데 가장 주목을 덜 받았던 편이다. 그것은 아마도 중학교 국어 교과서에 수록되기 위해 의뢰받아 집필되었다는 작품의 특수성 때문일 것이다. 하지만 이 희곡에 대해서도 작가론적 맥락에서 그 위상을 재검토해볼 필요가 있다. 그 작업을 위해, 이강백의 다른 희곡들 중 <들판에서>와 가장 눈에 띄는 공통점을 지닌 두 희곡을 선택하여 그 특성들을 비교해보았다. 그 두 작품은, <들판에서>의 무대 설정과 유사한 텅 빈 들판에 정치 현실의 알레고리를 담아낸 <파수꾼>, 그리고 <들판에서>의 인물 갈등과 유사한 구도 안에 역시 남북 분단 문제를 비유적으로 담아낸 <호모 세파라투스>이다. 그러나 <파수꾼>의 알레고리가 한국의 1970년대 정치 현실에 대한 문제에서부터 보편적 차원에서의 통제 담론 문제에 이르기까지 다층적으로 해석될 수 있는 데 비해, <들판에서>의 정치적 알레고리는 상대적으로 단순하게 설정되어 있다. 또한 <호모 세파라투스>가 관념적 전개 방식 안에서도 가족 및 주변인물과의 갈등에 있어 세부적 구체성을 살린 데 비해, <들판에서>의 갈등은 형제와 외부인 중심의 뼈대를 세우는 데 치중하고 있다. 이는 <들판에서>가 청소년층을 대상으로 한 교육연극으로서의 목표를 살리기 위해 갖게 된 특징으로, 특히 앞의 두 작품에 담긴 암울하고 비관적인 결말에 비해 낙관적 전망을 보이는 점도 눈길을 끈다. 결국 <들판에서>는 이강백 개인의 고유한 극작 스타일과, 교육연극적 목표에 부합하는 이 작품만의 개별성이 중첩되는 작품이다. 그렇기에 지금까지 국어교육 방면의 연구에서만 주로 관심의 대상이 되어왔던 것과는 달리, 이강백 희곡론 안에서도 이 작품의 의의를 일정 부분 인정할 필요가 있다.

Lee Kang Baek`s Play is, when discussing his works` world, taken less importantly. Because it was written particularly in order to be published in the national textbook for junior high school. But there is a necessity which even about this play tries to reappraise the phase from the authoristic point of view. For this work, after selecting two plays which keep the most prominent point of sameness among Lee`s different plays, comparison tried. The two works are and . puts in the allegory of political actuality in the empty field with stage set being similar as . also puts in the division of korean peninsula figuratively with similar structure as character discord in . But the allegory of is analysed multilayerly from problems about 1970`s political actuality of Korea to problems about discourse of control on universal dimension. However, the political allegory of is simply set. Also saves a detailed concreteness in conflicts of the family and the circumferential person with conceptional development method. But the discord of is attaching importance in building the bone structure of the sibling and the outsider. This feature is to save the aim from one educational theater for the younger generation. Especially, while two plays have the pessimistic ends, has put out an optimistic prospect. Finally is a work where the author`s playwriting style and the characteristic individuality for educational theatre are piled on another. Only researches of educational direction have been carried out until now. However, there is a necessity inside drama`s theory about Lee kang baek which will recognize the questionable matter of this play.
