역사적으로 볼 때 북한과 중국의 관계는 1960년대 중소분쟁, 북한의 자주노선 선포, 중국의 문화혁명을 거치면서 가장 큰 부침을 겪었다. 본 연구는 1960년대 중반 북한과 중국의 갈등 원인을 검토해보고, 양국의 이러한 갈등이 북한 외교정책에 미친 영향을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 1950년대까지 중국과 소련의 대립에 대하여 북한은 중립적인 태도를 보였으나 1962년-1964년까지 실질적으로 중국 노선에 치우치지 않을 수 없었다. 북한은 남한과의 분단 상황 하에 반미 통일전선을 추구하고 있었기 때문에 소련을 ``수정주의``로 비판하였고 친중 노선을 공개적으로 드러내었다. 그러나 1965년을 기점으로 북한의 대중정책이 변화되었다. 이것은 중국의 베트남 지원에 대한 정책이 원인이 되었다. 당시 중국이 북 베트남 지원 문제에서 소련의 공동 협력 제의를 거부하고, 미국과의 충돌을 피하기 위해 노력했는데, 이러한 중국의 정책은 기존 민족해방운동 지원을 주장한 것과 배치되는 것이었다. 이전까지 중국의 노선을 지지하던 북한은 이러한 중국의 태도를 ``좌익기회주의``로 비판하였다. 외교적으로 독자 노선을 추구하기 시작한 북한은 중국의 반대에도 불구하고 북베트남에 대한 파병을 감행함과 동시에 남한에 대한 무력 공세를 강화함으로써 베트남을 간접적으로 지원하였다. 이 시기에 북중갈등은 북한이 ``친중노선``의 입장에서 벗어나 중국과 소련을 모두 비판하는 중립적인 입장을 취하게 하였다. 결국 베트남 지원에 대한 북한과 중국의 갈등은 북한의 ``자주노선`` 선포에 영향을 주었다.

The Vietnam War in 1960`s influenced not only Indo-China but whole Asia about the topography of security. The purpose of this study is two things. Frist, it seeks to search for North Korean and Chinese reaction to the change of security environment. Second, it seeks to find out the reasons and the results of the troubles between North Korea and China. North Korea seemed to adhere to neutrality in the beginning of Sino-Soviet discord, but inclined toward China line actually as the divided country in Korean peninsula. She officially supported China from 1964. However, Chinese Government opinion of the Vietnam war changed North Korean perception of China. First, China rejected Soviet、s request of cooperation in supporting Northern Vietnam. Second, the chinese government tried to support northern vietnam unofficially for circumvention of collision with the U.S. North Korea insisted on positive cooperation between socialist states. The conflict of Sino-North Korea results in the neutrality of North Korean. Nevertheless opposition of China, they dispatched the troops in the Vietnam war and heightened tension in Korean peninsula. Finally, the conflict influenced North Korean neutral diplomatic policy and declared Self-reliant diplomacy line.
