일부 중앙일간지의 과도한 구독 혜택과 같은 불공정거래가 지방 독자 잠식과 더불어 지역일간지 구독 이탈 현상을 가중시킬 수 있다는 우려의 목소리가 지속적으로 제기되고 있다. 그러나 이에 대한 법적·제도적 규제 및 처벌은 과거에 비해 오히려 낮아지고 있다는 정부 및 민간단체의 조사결과가 제시돼 지역 신문사들은 불만을 터트리고 있다. 따라서 본고에서는 일부 중앙일간지의 과도한 구독 혜택 제공의 심각성을 살펴보고, 이런 혜택제공이 실제로 지역 독자의 구독에 어떤 영향을 미치는지에 대해 살펴봤다. 또한 본고에서는 구독 혜택뿐만 아니라 각 종이신문의 내용적 속성이 구독에 미치는 영향을 함께 살펴봄으로써 중앙일간지와 지역일간지 구독 이유간의 차이를 밝혀내고자 했다. 편의표본추출방식을 적용하여 대구·경북에 거주하는 종이신문 구독자 총 693명을 대상으로 설문지를 배포하여 데이터를 수집했다. 연구 결과 중앙일간지를 대표하는 조·중·동 신문으로부터 구독 혜택을 들은 빈도가 다른 신문으로부터 들은 빈도보다 훨씬 높았고, 구독 혜택을 들을수록 그 신문을 구독하는 경향이 강했다. 그러나 구독 이유를 묻는 설문조사결과, 구독 혜택은 신문구독 결정에 중요한 요인이 아닌 것으로 드러나 다소 상반된 연구결과가 도출됐다. 중앙 일간지와 지역일간지를 구독하는 집단 간에는 구독 이유의 중요성 측면에서 매우 상이한 태도를 보였다.

It has been consistently stated that unfair sales promotion practices such as excessive subscription benefits provided by some major national daily newspapers have encroached on regional subscribers and aggravated the subscription left from regional newspapers. However, research conducted by governmental and civic associations presented that lawful and institutional regulation and penalty have been lower than the past, which instigated regional newspapers to complain of. Thus this study was to take a closer look at serious aspects of excessive subscription benefits provided by some major national daily newspapers. Furthermore this study investigated how much excessive subscription benefits would affect regional subscribers` subscription behaviors. In addition to the effect of excessive subscription benefits, this study also intended to reveal differences between motives of major national daily newspaper subscriptions and those of regional daily newspaper subscriptions by examining the effects of content properties of each newspaper on subscriptions. Data were collected from 693 residents in Daegu and Kyungbuk province recruited with a convenient sampling. Results showed that participants who have listened to subscription benefits from ChoSunIlbo, JungAngIlbo and DonAaIlbo outnumbered those who have listened to from the other newspapers. Participants who were more likely to listen to subscription benefits were more likely to subscribe those newspapers. However, from the answers to the questions about subscription motives, subscription benefits turned out not to be the significant factors in the decision-making on subscriptions. There were significant differences in the importance of subscription motives between major national and regional daily newspaper subscribers.
