오늘날 우리는 권리 담론이 만연한 자유주의 사회에 살고 있다. 그러므로 시민은 공동선에 관심을 갖고 공동선의 실현에 개인적 책임을 가져야 한다는 공화주의적 시민성을 검토하는 것은 오늘날의 한국 사회에서 매우 의의가 있다. 그러나, 다양한 유형과 주장을 가진 공화주의 사상들이 등장하였기 때문에 공화주의의 핵심 가치와 궁극적으로 지향하는 바가 무엇이냐에 대해서는 논란의 여지가 있다. 본 논문에서는 공화주의의 시민성을 아테네적 전통과 로마적 전통으로 분류하여 각각의 전통에서 의미하는 공화주의의 핵심 가치와 공동선에 대해 검토하였다. 공화주의의 핵심 가치는 자유, 자기-통치와 민주주의, 시민적 덕성으로 구분될 수 있으나, 양 전통에서 각각의 의미는 조금 상이하다. 또한 공화주의가 지향하는 궁극적 목표인 공동선에 대해서도 양 전통은 조금씩 다르게 이해하고 있다. 한편, 양 전통은 시민적 덕성의 필요성에 대해서는 한 목소리를 내고 있으나, 그 근거는 다르다. 아테네적 전통에서는 정치 참여와 시민적 덕성 그 자체가 본질적 가치를 지니고 있으나, 로마적 전통에서는 정치 참여와 시민적 덕성이 비지배의 자유와 공동선의 실현을 위한 도구적 성격이 강하다.

It is crucial to accept the republican citizenship in order to remedy the pathologies of liberalism. Republicanism, which flows from understanding citizens as engaged in a political community, has long suggested the idea that citizens need to be concerned with the common good and to take part some personal responsibility for realizing it. It is, however, debatable to define the core values of republican citizenship for the diversely emerging republican schools. In this paper I categorized them into Athenian traditions and Roman traditions and argued, respectively, their core values and understandings of common good. Although I picked out liberty, self-rule and democracy, and civil virtue as the core values of republicanism, as you can imagine, both traditions have different understandings for each of them. Both traditions have one voice for the necessity of the civil virtue but they have different rationale for it. While the political participation and citizenship have intrinsic values in Athenian traditions, instrumental values for the realizing of liberty as non-domination and common good in Roman traditions.
