일반적으로 전통문양은 민족의 정서를 내포하고 있을 뿐만 아니라 언어나 문자와 같이 사용 주체인 민족과 그 민족의 역사적 배경에 따라 고유의 조형성을 가지고 있기 때문에 새로움을 추구하는 창작과정에서 디자인의 영감으로 활용할 가치가 높다. 디자인의 새로운 원천으로 문화적 전통의 활용이 강조되고 있는 것도 이러한 이유 때문이라 할 수 있다. 최근에는 세계적인 디자인 트렌드로 오리엔탈리즘의 문화가 주목되고 있고, 우리나라의 디자인 영역에서도 이러한 세계적 경향의 흐름에 맞춰 한국적인 디자인을 찾아볼 수 있다. 특히 전통문양의 조형적 특성을 응용하여 한국적 이미지를 재현하고자 하는 다양한 시도들이 건축, 전자제품, 인테리어, 섬유, 패션 분야 등 여러 분야에서 전반적으로 나타나고 있다. 이러한 관점에서 본 연구자는 민족의 정서와 정신이 담긴 태극에 대한 상징성과 의미, 조형성에 대한 이론적 고찰을 통해 태극이 갖고 있는 상징적 이미지를 현대적 감각으로 재해석 하여 간결하고 모던한 느낌의 오브제로 표현하는데 중점을 두었다.

Generally, traditional cultural materials can easily utilize as design resources during creative design processes since they contain not only a national sentiment but also an unique formation that connoted one`s background. This is why we emphasize application of the cultural tradition as a new design resource. This current trend is not an exception for Korea and many designers and design companies have been interested in a traditional Korean design element as the source of unique design identities. Among these new trends, there were many representative attempts that bring new design motive from Korean international pattern image and we fing many successful cases of these attempts in the area of architecture, electronic, interior, textile, and fashion. Therefore, this research emphasizes that Korean traditional pattern images could used as a design motives that show modern sense and would like to suggest new design identities. With this perspective in mind, based on moulding of Taegeuk, this study aims to introduce unique Korean design identities that differentiate from The Western styles of design.
