본고는 경남 사천에 있는 구암 이정의 유적지인 대관대의 연혁에 대한 문헌고증이다. 이는 이정과 조식의 말년 생애와 깊은 관련을 가지므로, 그 문제 또한 아울러 언급하였다. 오늘날 구계서원이 위치한 구암리 일대는 이정이 태어난 곳이자, 3대에 걸쳐 그의 집안이 세거해 온 곳이다. 대관대라는 명칭은 이정 자신이 지은 글에서는 보이지 않고, 문집에 실린 그의 글에는 그것이 모두 靜觀臺라는 명칭으로 나타난다. 정관대는 다만 주변의 경치를 감상하기 위해 지은 건물이 아니고, 그의 서재 역할도 겸했다. 대관대란 후일 이황이 고쳐준 이름이다. 이정은 만년에 고향 땅에다 龜巖精舍를 짓고서, 벼슬을 사절하고 거기서 제자들과 더불어 강학하는 생활을 보냈다고 한다. 그는 이에 앞서 조식과 더불어 지리산에 들어가 함께 살것을 약속한 바 있었고, 명종 16년(1561)에 산천재 곁에다 자기가 살 기와집을 지었다. 하종악 후처사건으로 말미암은 이정과 조식의 절교는 두 사람의 생애에 있어 가장 만년에 일어났던 일로서, 각자에게 준 심리적 타격은 큰 것이었다. 이정이 관직생활을 그만 둔 이후 지리산에 들어가 조식과 함께 만년을 보낼 생각을 실제로 갖고 있었는지 어떤지는 판단하기 어려우나, 적어도 그가 고향 땅에 구암정사를 마련하게 된 것은 조식과의 관계가 끝난 이후였다. 오늘날의 구계서원은 곧 구암정사의 後身이다. 대관대 앞의 서당이란 구계서원이 훼철된 이후 그것을 대신하여 세워진 약소한 건물이다. 그러므로 오늘날 이곳이 곧 구암정사의 옛터로 간주되고 있는 것은 넌센스이다.
This is a bibliographical study on the history of Daegwan-dae, the relic of Lee Jeong in Sacheon, Gyeongsangnamdo province. As the place has deep relationships with the last years of Lee Jeong and Jo Shik, this paper also discusses this issue. The neighborhood of Guam-ri is the place where Lee was born and his family had lived for three generations. The name Daegwan-dae does not appear in Lee`s writings, but it always appears as Jeonggwan-dae in the collection of his works. Jeonggwan-dae was not only a pavilion to appreciate the scenery around but also served as Lee`s study. Daegwan-dae is the name that Lee Hwang changed it to for him later. It is said that Lee, in his last years, built Guam-jeongsa in his native place and spent the life of a scholar with his disciples, refusing the government posts. But before that, he had promised to Jo Shik to go into Mt. Jiri and live with Jo, and he actually built a tile-roofed house near Sancheon-jae in 1661. The breach of friendship between the two by the case of Ha Jongak`s second wife occurred in their latest years and its psychological shock was great for each. It is not clear that Lee really made up his mind to quit his official career and go into Mt. Giri to live with Jo, but it was, at least, after the end of the friendship with Jo that he arranged to build Guam-jeongsa on his native place. Gugae-seowon today is succeeding Guam-jeongsa. The so-called schoolhouse was a small structure which had been built instead of Gugae-seowon after its demolition. Therefore, it is a nonsense that it is to be considered today as the site of Guam-jeongsa.
