The aqua-road and aqua perm machine developed to reduce hair damage and maintain healthy hair were used in this study. The curlforming capacity of aqua perm and heat perm were 52% and 68%, respectively, which the curl-forming capacity of aqua perm was higher and more elastic than that of heat perm. For the aqua perm performed in high temperature (140˚C), the hair was smooth, shiny and elastic according to the diagnosis by visual and tactual inspection. If it was pulled to release, it went back to its original position immediately. Yet for the commercial heat perm, the hair was elastic but its ends shrank in zigzags and tangled roughly. The aqua perm plays an important role in maintaining the requisite optimum moisture of 25±5 percentage in the case of heat perm. Tensile strength and elongation for the healthy hair permed by the aqua-road and aqua perm machine showed that there is a gradual decline in the strength in comparison with commercial heat perm. While for the heat perm, the higher temperature of the perm operating, the more increase of the tensile strength because of the hair hardening caused by high temperature exposure. For the aqua perm, there was an insignificant difference with change of perm operating temperature. While for the heat perm, with rise of the temperature, cuticle has got loose and detached severely. Besides, the damaged hair showed that the cuticle becomes very thin and flakes easily caused by the hardening of perm hair.
