한국민속학은 한민족의 일상적인 생활문화를 그 연구대상으로 한다. 또 한 민속학은 현지조사를 기초로 이루어지기 때문에 민속문화가 전승되고 있는 민속의 현장을 직접 조사하는 것이 매우 중요한 요소로 여겨진다. 북한 현지에서의 민속조사는 현실적으로 어려운 것도 사실이지만 전혀 불가능한 것은 아니다. 이러한 입장에서 보면 한국민속학의 체계적인 발전 을 위해서 한국의 민속을 비롯해서 북한의 민속을 포괄할 수 있는 통일민속학의 필요성이 제기될 수 있다. 정치와 경제구조가 바뀌어도 민중들의 일상적인 생활 속에 자리 잡고 있는 민속문화는 여전히 그 명맥을 유지하고 있는 경우가 대부분이다. 가령 예를 들어서 북한의 속담과 수수께끼를 보면 정치적인 색채가 뚜렷하지만 역시 그 속에는 한민족의 민속문화가 그대로 반영되어 있는 경우가 많다. 한민족문화공동체를 형성하기 위해서는 우선적으로 한민족이 공유하고 있는 민속문화에 대한 지속적인 관심과 연구가 필요하다. 따라서 통일민속학은 그 중심에서 한민족문화공동체를 형성하는데 중요한 역할을 담당할 수 있는 것이다.

Folklore studies in Korea generally deal with ordinary Koreans` daily life culture. Also, in folklore studies, fieldwork carried out by folklorists plays an important role to understand delicate aspects of folk culture. Until quite recently doing fieldwork in North Korea has been nearly impossible, because it was almost unaccessible. Nevertheless, today, there is some possibility to visit North Korea and probably to do some field research on North Korean culture. This is because folklorists who promote purely traditional Korean culture are well treated in terms of promoting the same cultural identity. From this standpoint and perspective, it seems to be the right time now to discuss the so called “folklore for unification”. Both South and North Korea share similar folk culture even though each side has different political and economic systems. Hence the consistent efforts for cooperative researches on Korean folk culture between South and North led to the “folklore for unification” contributing to form “one” cultural community for Koreans.
