Pianist and composer Isaac Albeniz(1860-1909) was born in northeastern Spain. The astonishing pianistic ability of Albeniz inspired great praise and he was acclaimed as Spain`s greatest prodigy and even compared to Mozart. He toured and studied in Europe and America, and his experiences influenced on his music. After touring the United States in 1883, he met Felipe Pedrell who inspired the Spanish national spirit in his works. Pedrell was a composer and musicologist who had done a considerable amount of research in old Spanish music. Most of Albeniz`s works are for piano. His early works are primarily salon music, the middle works show the influence of Liszt, and the late works reflect Spanish folk music influenced by Pedrell. Suite Espan?la and La Vega are good examples of his late works, but Iberia is his masterpiece. Iberia is a set of twelve pieces in groups of three, in four books. Each piece has an individual title. Iberia is a synthesis of several musical styles including sophisticated compositional techniques that Albeniz learned in Paris, and virtuosic piano writing from Liszt compared to his early works which are rather simple. The highest point of his harmonic inventiveness is reached through the process of thematic transformation that permeates mush of Iberia. Albeniz uses rich harmonic vocabulary, rhythmic complexity, Spanish folk music elements, chromaticism and modality in Iberia. Several elements that had a great influence on this suite are Arabic music, Gypsy music, ancient Mozarabic chant which is the chant of the medieval Christian church in Spain, and guitar performance technique. Ibeira is the outcome of many races, cultures, social classes and religions reflecting rich musical tradition of the Iberia peninsula. It also reflects hundreds years of music, dance and everyday life. It contains rhythmic vitality and dance rhythms from Islamic and gypsy music, melody, improvisation, expressions of emotion and vocal style by cante jondo of gypsy music, modality and melisma by Mozarabic chant, and guitar idiom. The Suite Iberia is a much celebrated masterpiece that evokes the experiences and travels of Albeniz through the Aldalusian region.
