한국 근대 문학을 탄생시킨 ‘문학’과 ‘소설’ 개념의 번역은 ‘비교’와 ‘대조’의 방법론을 통해 이루어졌다. 이광수, 김동인, 염상섭 등 근대 소설을 한국 문학사에 안착시킨 소설가들이 수행한 이 작업은, ‘이야기/소설’의 대립과 ‘역사/소설’의 비교라는 이중적 차원에서 진행되었다. 이광수, 김동인, 염상섭이 근대 이전의 “이야기”들과 차별화시킨 근대 소설의 특성은, 당대 현실의 사상, 감정, 생활에서 제재와 내용을 찾아야 한다는 현실적 ‘대상’의 측면과 그것이 생생한 사실처럼 느껴지도록 재현해야 한다는 사실적 ‘방식’의 측면을 모두 포함했다. 문학에서 현실 반영의 기능과 양식을 중시하는 것은 오늘날 잘 인식되지 않지만 실상 완전히 새로운 발상이었다. 근대 초기 소설가들은 소설이 재현해야 하는 대상을 과거의 ‘역사’에서 유래한 ‘사실’이란 동일한 언어로 사고했지만, 그들이 생각한 ‘사실’이란 근대 초기에 새롭게 구성된 개념으로서 인생의 참된 진상과 진리라는 새로운 인식론적 실재를 가리키는 말이었다. 여기에는 개인의 내면적 능력과 주관성, 개성에 대한 옹호와 신뢰가 깔려 있다. 허구란 참된 사실을 재현하기 위해 예술가의 주관적 능력과 독창적 시각에 의해서만 만들어낼 수 있는 것이라고 보았기 때문이다. 소설을 이해하고 인식하기 위한 두 방향의 실천에서 공통된 대상은 바로 ‘역사’였으며, 이는 ‘사실’ 개념의 중층화를 꾀한 메타언어적 의식의 소산이었다. 소설과 함께 사실효과와 사실적 재현양식이 정착되면서, 소설은 당대 사회의 삶과 현실을 바라보고 구성하는 인식론적 틀이자 개인과 민족이라는 근대적 정체성을 주조하는 양식으로 기능하게 되었다.

It was through the methodology of comparison and contradiction that concepts translations of ``literature`` and ``novel`` gave birth to Korean modern literature. This process was performed by the early novelists such as Lee Kwang-soo, Kim Dong-in, Yeom Sang-sub and was accomplished by their dual comparisons of ``iyaki/novel`` and ``history/fiction``. They differentiated the characteristics of modern novel with pre-modern narrative style, ``iyaki``. That included both the objects of seeking for literary contents in comtemporary reality and the ways of representing them like vivid facts. They drew such a word of ``fact`` from history for expressing a new literary truth that they could think about the dual concept of ``fact`` and the new epistemological reality of true life. Their idea which was owed to words of ``fact`` and ``history`` stemmed from meta-lingual consciousness. Therefore novel became a realistic representation style and became a epistemological frame of looking social reality.
