이 논문은 <만파식적>설화의 다시읽기를 통해 이야기에 담긴 사회 통합의 의미를 탐색하는데 목적이 있다. <만파식적>설화는 이야기에 담긴 신이성 때문에 후대 학자들은 그 실상을 부정하면서도, 근심을 잠재울 수 있다는 기능에 대해서는 매력을 느끼며 지속적으로 향유하였다. 그리하여 이야기가 처음 만들어진 시대의 호국사상과 사회 통합 의지를 역사적으로 고찰하는 데 힘을 쏟았다. 그러나 『삼국사기』의 사료로는 ``김흠돌의 반란`` 사건을 무마하는 장치, 또는 신문왕대에 와서 무열왕계의 왕권을 강화하는 장치 정도로만 해석이 가능한 실정이었다. 이에 『삼국유사』에 만파식적을 언급한 이야기들을 다시 읽으면서 『삼국사기』의 기사와 비교하고, 논증의 대상에서 배제된 『화랑세기』의 기사를 통해 그 통합의 실상을 탐색하였다. 그 결과 <만파식적>설화는 외적을 방어하기 위한 호국의 장치보다는 국내의 변란을 진압하고 무마하는 사회 통합의 장치로 기능하는 측면이 강하였다. 신문왕과 효소왕 때 언급된 내용은 무열왕계와 가야계의 통합을 목적으로 한 경우이고, 원성왕 때 언급된 내용은 내물왕계와 무열왕계의 통합을 목적으로 한 것으로 파악된다. 그리고 조화와 통합을 위한 기제로 활용하기 위하여 피리라는 악기를 설정하였는데, 만파식적은 두 계파를 상징하는 대나무 두 개를 나란히 붙여 소리를 내는 악기일 가능성이 크다. 현재 만파식적을 대금의 원형으로 파악하고 있는데, 이는 잘못이다. 지금은 찾아볼 수 없지만 대나무 두 개를 나란히 붙여서 만든 쌍피리의 형상이었을 것이다.

In the conclusion, should be studied in aspect of society unification rather than defense from outer enemy. And the time of King Sinmun and Hyoso, the purpose of unification of King Muyeul and Gaya`s family, the time of King Wonsung for King Naemul and Muyeul`s family`s unification. And musical instrument, pipe was equipped for the purpose of harmony and unification, Manpasikjuk may possibly be two bamboo pipes attached which stand for two factions. Currently Manpasikjuk is being regarded as Korean recorder, Daeguem, it is fault. It must be the shape of twin bamboo pipes which are currently not be seen.
