『雪岫外史』는 이희경의 실학적 사유와 조선의 현실을 경장하고자 하는 그의 실학적 사유를 고스란히 담고 있다. 그는 수레 및 선박의 이용, 농기구의 개량과 농사짓는 법을 개량하여 민의 삶을 살찌우고 사회 전체 생산력을 높이고자 하였다. 이는 이용후생의 구체적인 실천 방안이기도 하다. 이희경이 도구의 중요성을 특히 강조하고 있는 것이나 수레의 사용 등을 적극 주장한 것을 감안하면, 『설수외사』는 농·공·상의 균형발전을 통해 사회 전체의 경장을 기획하고 있음도 알 수 있다. 이 점에서 이희경의 『설수외사』는『북학의』를 잇는 제 2의『북학의』이기도 한다. 그는 5차례의 연행 체험을 통해 얻은 넓은 시야와 안목을『설수외사』에 녹여 자신이 추구한 이상과 혼을 담아내었다. 그 이상은 다름 아닌 낙후된 조선을 이용후생을 통해 경장하려는 기획이었다.

Yi Higyeong(李喜經), the author of Seolsu oisa(雪岫外史), wrote his book to convey his practical thoughts on social reform. He intended to expand social productivity and enrich the people`s lives by improving farming skills and agricultural machinery as well as the uses of wagons and ships. This was practical methods for utility and welfare. Considering that Yi Higyeong put a high emphasis on the significance of machinery, we also see that the Seolsu oisa is intended to design the overall social reform by the balanced development of agriculture, manufacture, and commerce. In this sense, Yi`s Seolsu oisa can be considered as the other version of Bukageui. In his book, Yi Higyeong made great efforts to portray his ideals from his broad perspectives that he obtained through his five visits to Beijing. His ideal was to reform backward Choseon society by the methods of utility and welfare.
