불교에서 말하는 변화의 원리를 현대의 영상매체를 통해 잘 표현하고 있는 예술가가 Bill Viola와 김아타이다. 이 두 작가는 불교에서 말하는 존재의 원리를 한 사람은 동영상으로 통해, 한 사람은 정지영상을 통해 표현해 왔다. Viola는 관점의 탁월함보다는 동양사상에서 강조하는 변화와 순환의 원리, 그리고 물과 불의 상보적 작용이라는 존재의 원리를 시각적·청각정으로 매우 볼 만하면서도 강력한 인식으로 이끄는 동영상 이미지를 제작하였다. 지연과 축약이라는 영상기법을 사용하여, 모르고 있었던 것 같지만 알고 보면 이미 알고 있던 사실을 아주 새로운 느낌으로 받아들이게 하면서 동시에 아주 강렬한 인식을 불러일으키는 데 성공하였다. 김아타는 사진이 순간을 포착하는 예술이라는 명제를 깊이 성찰하여 역설적 의미로 순간성을 되살렸다. 여러 시간, 내지는 여러 날, 여러 달에 이르기까지의 긴 시간을 한 순간으로 포착해 내는 놀라운 작업을 함으로써 존재와 시간과 공간의 문제를 근본적으로 되묻게 하고 있다. 이러한 표현에는 축적과 분절이라는 독특한 기법이 사용되었다. Viola와 김아타는 서로 다른 기법과 매체를 사용하였으나, 매체의 한계를 극복하면서 순간성의 의미에 집중하도록 한 점에서는 동일하다. Viola는 존재의 순환성을 강조하여 유동하는 시간의 흐름 속에서 오히려 현재를 소중히 여기고 집중하도록 하는 명상적 관점을 잘 표현하였다. 김아타 역시 시간 속에 변화하고 소멸하는 존재의 속성을 말하면서도 단순한 순환을 강조하기보다는 그 변화와 순환의 과정에 역사성의 문제를 개입시켰다는 점에서 차이가 있다. 김아타는 존재의 변화는 변화로써 끝나는 것이 아니라 업을 수반하는 것이며, 인간은 그 업의 정화를 통해 순환을 단순한 순환이 아닌 생명의 과정으로 키워낼 수 있음을 강조한다. 그래서 그의 작품에는 역사의 과정에서 형성된 커다란 아픔의 상처들을 치유하여 온전한 생명의 에너지로 되살리고자 하는 몸부림이 담겨 있다. Viola와 김아타는 시간 속의 변화라는 비슷한 기점에서 출발하였지만, 존재와 생명, 관조와 정화, 시간과 역사의 측면에서 서로 관점의 층위를 달리하는 것으로 보인다.

Bill Viola highlighted existence and relations through interdependence and mutual reflections of existence using video. He revealed a Buddhist worldview that existence in the circular relations of time, life and death are made up of not interruptions but infinite continuations. Atta Kim presented a similar Buddhist worldview, but while revealing the futility of existence in the backdrop of flowing time, he highlights not only the viewpoints of looking at the world but strongly reveals the will and viewpoints of ascetic practices of enlightenment and purification by creating a process in which ideas and memories are nullified and revived into pure energy. Despite the disadvantages of using static images to express the flow of time, Atta Kim expressed the aesthetics of emptiness where the two sides of futility and infinity in the essence of existence cross simultaneously upon expressing the more impressive flow of time. In contrast, Bill Viola expresses the essential relationship of the ever changing existence by showing slow movements on video, which is a more effective medium in showing movements. It can be said that if Bill Viola tried to reveal the essence of unchangeable existence through video, Atta Kim shows characteristics opposite to this by attempting to capture the forms of endlessly changing existence through still photography. Either way, aesthetic achievements are dramatically attained in the course of overcoming limitations of media.
