잡지 『조광』은 `『개벽』시대` 이후의 매체사를 집적(集積)하는 존재이다. 또 대중성, 상업주의, 친일의 문제와 얽히니 지성사(知性史)의 과제이기도 하다. 아울러 『조광』의 문학적 면모는 본원적인 탐색을 견인하는 바가 있다. 이것이 잡지 『조광』을 연구해야 하는 까닭이다. 두 편의 선행연구는 『조광』 연구에 매체론적 관점이 필요함을 말해준다. 하나는 서지학자의 섬세한 시선과 신중한 태도가 필요함을 보여주었고, 다른 하나는 실증적 방법과 뚜렷한 목표의식이 결합했을 때의 가능성을 보여주었다. 무엇보다 통독(通讀)이 매체연구의 수단이자 방법임을 각인시킨다. 연구사 검토를 통해 『조광』 연구의 방법과 주요 과제를 재정립해 보았다. 그 핵심은 다음과 같다. 『조광』의 대중성, 친일성, 상업주의 문제는 모두 실증적으로 점검할 필요가 있다. 특히 친일 문제는 시계열적 분석을 통해 그 구체적 실상을 점검하고 판단할 필요가 있다. 친일 여부나 시기의 문제는 그 다음이다. 위의 세 가지 키워드를 가지고 문학, 논설, 잡문, 광고, 표지 등에 접근하는 연구도 중요하다. 문학의 전모를 파악하고 그 위상 변화를 추적하는 것이 주요 과제의 하나이다. 그 토대로서 서지 관련 사항을 확정하고 원본과 영인본을 비교대조하는 작업은 필수적이다.
Magazine Jogwang was the accumulation of media history after the age of Kaebyuk. Also it has connected with popularity, commercialism, pro-Japan activities. For these reasons, to deal with Jogwang is another work of studying on intellectual history Also literary aspects in Jogwang bring up a radical problem. That is the reason why we study Jogwang. Two precedent studies show that we need view mediology when we study Jogwang. One study shows the need of a bibliographer`s delicate sight and prudent attitude. The other suggests the vision of mediology when clear aims are united with the actual way of proving. Rather other things, to read through is the best tool and method of studying media. By examining the precedent studies, this study pays particular attention to the way of studying Jogwang and its major tasks Jogwang has. The main points are as follow. Popularity, commercialism, pro-Japan activities in Jogwang are needed to examined by proving facts. Especially pro-Japan activities, we should need to study and judge the specific facts by diachronic analysis. Whether one is pro-Japan or not and when one is collaborated with Japan are not the first issue. It will be im-portant to approach the study with the three key words. It is main tasks to understand the literature generally and examine the changing status of the literature. On the basis of the task, it is necessary to check on a bibliography and compare the originals with a photographic edition.
