In the road construction or city development sites, a great quantity of rocks is cut and the sites are filled. If the construction sites have sulfide mineral layers, acid rock drainage(ARD) may cause environ mental pollution or corrosion of structures. ARD is also called acid mine drainage(AMD). It usually occurs in mines, but also appears in the layers not related to mines. ARD appears in the case of rock cutting and filling because the rocks that are disturbed by excavation may mineralogically generate a large amount of acid. The effects of ARD include severe environmental pollution due to the heavy metal contained in low-pH acidic water, and mechanical damage due to concrete corrosion, cracks in the structure ground caused by sulfide expansion, and unstable slopes. In this study, the ARD acidification factors were derived, and an efficient ARD treatment technique was proposed to provide basic data for the study on ARD purification.
