마산오광대는 3월 말 또는 4월 초에 별신굿에 부쳐 연행되었다. 마산지역의 별신굿은 조창과 관련된 제의다. 마산오광대가 연희된 날은 마산창에서 조운선이 출항하는 날이다. 이날은 현재 마산 어시장의 성신제로 전승되어 현재까지 3월 28일의 제일을 유지하고 있다. 마산오광대의 연희 장소는 자산동 타작마당과 산호동 산해관 마당 등이다. 자산동 타작마당은 탈제를 지내는 제의의 공간이면서 탈놀이의 연희공간이기도 하다. 그곳은 별신제의 상당인 산제당과 어시장 신전을 잇는 중로에 있다. 그리고 산해관 마당은 고려시대 합포의 석두창이 있던 곳이다. 이곳은 별신제의 하당인 용마산과 기생들의 연희공간을 아우르는 장소다. 마산오광대의 연행을 주재한 집단은 별신제의 주재 집단이다. 1894년 조창이 폐지되기 전까지는 마산창의 관속이 제의와 탈놀이를 주재했다. 여기에는 향리집단의 이해관계가 반영된다. 1905년 어시장 객주 집단이 별신제를 성신제로 부흥시키면서 탈놀이의 새로운 주재 집단이 된다. 1918년 이후 권번 기생들도 상업적 흥행을 목적으로 탈놀이를 주재했다. 마산오광대의 연희의 주체는 다층적 성격을 가진다. 밤마리 오광대가 유입되기 전의 별신굿에서 무당의 굿놀이로 존재했던 토착적 탈놀이가 있었다. 이 탈놀이의 주체는 무당이다. 별신제가 성신제로 재현된 시기는 전문 연희 집단인 광대가 주체가 된다. 1930년 권번이 해산되는 시기에는 기생들이 연희의 주체가 된다. 이후 성신제의 단절과 함께 탈놀이의 주재 집단이 사라지자 마산오광대는 역사적 단절을 초래하게 되었다.

Masan O-gwangdai was played at the departure day of cargo boat. This day was the opening day of Byeolsinje. The mask play was held in that place after the sacrificial rites and the practices of exorciser. Seongsinje held by fisheries matchmakers union of Masan fish market maintained this tradition. The threshing ground at Jasandong and Sanhaigwan at Sanhodong are known as the performing places of Masan O-gwangdai. The threshing ground at Jasandong is the space of both sacrificial rites and performance of mask play. This, along with Sanhaigwan, is related to house of sacrificial rites and is identical as performing place of gwangdai. Until Jochang is abolished the officials supervised Byeolsinje and mask play. Since 1905 the initiatives falled into commission agent and after the abolishment of Seongsinje gisaings held the mask play for the purpose of commercial entertainment. The main group of Masan O-gwangdai has multi-layered structure. Before the introduction of Bammari O-gwangdai, there was a native mask play of which main group was exorcists. the professional gwangdai was the main group at the time Byeolsinje reappeared as Seongsinje. In 1930`s gisaings became main group since Masan Gweonbeon has been dissolved. Thereafter Masan O-gwangdai lost its playing basis along with disappearing main group of mask play due to cease of Seongsinje.
