재일 한인 작가 김학영은 끊임없이 `말더듬이`를 서사화하고 있다. 지금까지 그의 작품은 대체로 민족의식과 관련하여 적극적인 평가를 받아오지 못했지만 디아스포라 문학에서 `말더듬이`의 상징성은 대단히 크다. 실제 말더듬이였던 김학영은 글을 쓰는 고독한 작업에서 상대적 자유를 느꼈으며 말더듬이와 관련된 여러 가지 사건들을 반복적으로 서사화한다. 김학영의 작품에서 말더듬이는 교사와 아버지 등 제국적으로 제도화된 폭력과 깊은 관계가 있다. 그리고 그 말더듬이는 1923년 관동대진재 당시 처음 일본으로 건너와 일본어와의 위화감으로 결국 자살을 선택했던 할머니, 역시 일본어를 구사하지 못해 아버지의 폭력에 늘 노출되어 있었던 어머니에까지 연결되어 있다. 그리고 이런 모습은 김학영 뿐만 아니라 강상중, 김석범 등도 느끼고 있으며 이창래의 예에서 볼 수 있는 것처럼 디아스포라의 보편적인 특성이라고 할 수 있다. 들뢰즈/가타리가 카프카의 독일어를 언급하는 데서도 알 수 있듯이 디아스포라라는 존재는 본질적으로 말더듬이의 속성을 지닐 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 김학영은 이와 같은 문제를 집요하게 서사화한 작가이며 소설이 더 이상 말더듬이로부터의 해방이라기보다 삶을 유지하기 위한 노동의 의미로 전락할 때 자살을 선택할 수밖에 없었던 것으로 보인다.

Kim Hak-yeong, a Korean-Japanese writer, describes `stammerer` constantly. The symbolic power of `stammerer` is quite strong in the literature of diaspora even though Kim`s literary works have not gotten positive evaluation. Kim, who was a stammerer himself, felt relative freedom in writing which is a lonely work, and he repeatedly described various events concerned with stammerer. The protagonist realizes himself a stammerer at school which is an institutional space or in the relationship with his abusive father who we can feel imperial image in Kim`s work. The stammerer is related to his grandmother who came to Japan at the time of the Kanto earthquake in 1923, and chose suicide due to disharmony with the Japanese. It is also related to his mother who was always exposed to his father`s violence for her poor Japanese. Not only Kim but also Kang, Sang-jung and Kim, Suk-bum experienced this, and it is one of the universal features of diaspora as we can see in Lee, Chang-rae`s example. It is because that diaspora cannot help having stammerer`s feature as we can find in Deleuze and Guattari`s mention on Kafka. Kim is a writer who described this matter persistently. It seems that he chose suicide when his own novel became not a liberation from stammerer but a labor to maintain just his life.
