미니멀 아트는 추상표현주의의 뒤를 이어 1960년대 미국 화단의 흐름을 주도했던 대표적 사조이다. 요즘에도 종종 흰색으로 칠해진 캠퍼스나 검은 색으로 칠해진 커다란 상자 같은 조각 등을 전시장에서 보게 되는데, 이러한 것들이 바로 미니멀아트 작품이다. 여기서 ``미니멀`` 이라는 용어는 최소로 줄인다는 뜻이다. 현대인들은 점차적으로 단순한 디자인을 선호하는 경향이 있다. 예를 들어 건축분야나 일상용품에서 흔히 접하는 생활용품들은 점점 디자인이 단순화되어 가고 있는 추세이다. 미니멀 아트는 표현적이거나 환영적인 모든 과장을 거부하는 미술형태이다. 이 미술은 3차원적이고 우연적으로 형성되거나 단순한 기하학적 형태로 형성되어 똑같은 형태가 반복되는 특징을 지닌다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 미니멀 아트의 기하학적이고 단순한 반복의 형태를 전체적인 디자인 컨셉으로 금, 은 등의 귀금속이라는 매개체로서 재구성하여 디자인을 연구하고자 한다. 이는 회화나 조각 등 미니멀 아트가 가지고 있는 특성을 이용하여 귀금속디자인의 한 영역으로 제시하고자 한다.
