이글의 목적은 칼빈의 『기독교 강요』를 통해서 그의 예술론을 살펴보는데 있다. 로티(R. Rotty)에 따르면 오늘날 예술은 단순히 인간의 삶의 표현양식을 넘어 과거 목회자나 철학자들이 점유했던 도덕선생의 자리까지 차지하기에 이르렀다. 하지만 오늘날 개신교는 예술에 대해 왜곡된 선입견을 가지고 있는 것으로 보이는데, 로크마커(H. Rookmaaker)에 따르면 그 책임이 바로 칼빈주의자들이 있다고 보았다. 그렇다면 과연 칼빈은 예술을 부정했는가? 결코 그렇지 않다. 단지 칼빈은 예술이 하나님을 경배하는 일보다 앞서는 것을 경계했고, 이를 우상화하는 것을 강하게 비판했었다. 하지만 동시에 그 예술의 고유한 영역은 철저히 인정했던 것이다. 오히려 그는 당시 카톨릭의 전통 안에 억압되어 있었던 예술에 대해 자유를 부여했었다. 따라서 우리는 칼빈을 가리켜 단순히 반예술론자로 치부해서는 안 될 것이다. 그의 의도는 하나님의 형상으로 창조된 인간이 예술의 은사를 그 목적에 맞게 적절히 사용되기를 원했다. 즉, 칼빈에게 있어서 ``미``(美)는 하나님의 존재라고 하는 관점에서 벗어나서는 도저히 생각할 수 없었던 것이다. 결국 그에 따르면 예술의 목적은 하나님의 영광과 인간에의 봉사가 되는 것이다. 따라서 이 글은 예술을 대하는 신앙인들의 왜곡된 이해에 대해서 치유적 기능을 갖게 할 것이다.
The main purpose of this essay is to investigate J. Calvin`s conception of art through Institutes of the Christian Religion. According to R. Rotty, today`s arts is beyond simply a form of human expression of life, they had taken the place of both preachers and philosophers as the moral teachers of the youth. However in the present, the Protestantism is being regarded tat it has distorted prejudice for art. According to H. Rookmaaker, he regarded the Calvinismist has responsibility for that prejudice. If so, Did Calvin has denied the art indeed? It is absolutely not. Just he alerts that the art is being given priority than worshiping God and He had strongly blamed that the art is being made an idol itself. But simultaneously he had accepted thoroughly it`s own domain.on the contrary to this, he gave freedom to the art which has suppressed by tradition of Catholicism in those days. So we could not simply consider that the Calvin had a anti-artistic point of view. The intention of him is just want that the human who were created by shape of god use the innate gift of art appropriately for its own purpose. In other words, For Calvin, the ``beauty`` could be though out of perspective of God`s existence. Therefore, According to Him, The purpose of art is serving the glory of god and human being. So this article will have a function for those who have distorted prejudice when they treat the art.
