1996년 Piaget 탄생 100주기를 맞아 그의 이론을 수정·발전시키려는 노력이 이어지고 있을 정도로 그의 영향력은 여전하다. 그는 개념연구를 통해 인간의 지식구성을 탐색하였고 그의 이론에 대한 이해 없이 지식구성에 관한 새로운 관점을 이해하거나 창출해내기 어려울 정도로 인지발달분야에서 그의 위치는 여전하다. 유아교육 또한 Piaget의 이론에서 도출한 아동관을 토대로 유아를 이해하였을 뿐 아니라 이를 교육과정에 반영해왔다. 이것은 유아교육에서의 Piaget 연구의 필요성을 말해준다. 그러나 Vygotsky 이론과의 비교 과정에서 또한 그의 사후 그의 이론에 대한 비판도 적지 않다. 그의 이론이 동화, 조절과 발달단계에 한정되어 소개되었던 탓에 그에 대한 올바른 평가를 위해서는 그동안 간과되었던 개념연구에 주목할 필요가 있다. 그는 개념이 보편영역적으로 구성되며, 인지적 갈등의 주체가 유아 자신임을 밝혔다. 이러한 그의 생각은 유아교육과정이 아동중심, 실물교육, 통합교육과 사고유형 중심의 교육과정을 구성하도록 영향을 미쳤다. 유아교육과정의 근간을 이룬 것이다. 그 가운데 지식이 영역의 특성과 무관하게 논리의 발달에 의해 구성된다는 보편영역적 관점과 언어와 논리를 전혀 별개의 것으로 간주했던 그의 생각에 대해서는 반론이 제기되고 있다. 그러나 그의 이론이 논리에 입각하여 인지발달을 설명하였을 뿐 아니라, 지나친 언어 위주의 교육의 폐해에 대한 그의 염려는 여전히 유효하다. 결국 아동관의 정립과 유아교육의 발전을 위해서 Piaget를 위시한 이론에 대한 탐색이 필요하며, 이들을 통해 얻는 자료를 교육현장에 적용해야 할 것이다.

This study discusses on the influence of Piaget`s theory of concept formation on early childhood education. Jean Piaget`s undiminished presence in the academia of cognitive development is glimpsed in continuous efforts to refine his theory, which have become ever stronger since 1996, the 100th anniversary of Piaget`s birth. Piaget explored knowledge construction of human beings through investigation on concept formation. His achievements in this field are so unparalleled that it seems implausible to comprehend or create new perspectives on knowledge construction without understanding his ideas. Accordingly, experts in the field of early education may well have understood children and made up curriculum for them on the basis of his point of view. Therefore, constant efforts should be made in Early Childhood Education to better understand his theory. However, there has been posthumous criticism about his theory principally by comparison with Vygotsky s view. Furthermore, since, particularly, assimilation, adjustment and developmental stages have been standing out among his ideas, more efforts should be exerted to better appreciate his view on concept formation as a domain-general approach. Piaget revealed that concept was formed across the categories and it was a child himself who underwent cognitive conflicts as an active agent. The result of this study is as follows: Piaget`s perspective on cognitive development has influenced the establishment of curricula, which became the foundation of education for young children, such as child-centered learning, object teaching, integrated instruction, and instruction designed by types of thinking. Although there have been counter-arguments about his ideas that knowledge is formed mostly by the development of logical thinking regardless of categories of the knowledge and that the development of language and logic is a separate process, he was definitely insightful in that he explained cognitive development based on logic and expressed concerns about placing immoderate emphasis on language in education. In this context, to set up proper understanding on children and develop Early Childhood Education, research on Piaget-relevant theories as well as Piaget`s own should be continued and the findings should be transferred into the field for better practice.
