효는 매우 오래된 덕목이면서 동시에 오늘날 그 유효성을 의심받는 가치이기도 하다. 이 글은 `효의 바이블`이라 할 수 있는 『효경』을 통해 현대의 독자들을 효의 정신세계로 안내하는 작업을 하고 있다. 그 작업의 첫 단계는 『효경』이라는 책의 내력을 소개하는 것이다. 작자와 제작 연대, 금문－고문 논쟁, 여러 주석서들의 특징, 한반도에 전래되어 읽힌 주석서 등에 관한 역사적 사실들의 정리가 이 단계에서 한 일이다. 두 번째 단계는 책 내용으로 들어가서 『효경』이라는 책이 독자들에게 전달하려고 하는 효에 관한 메시지를 추출하는 것이다. 위대한 효자 순임금의 효도 설화를 재구성해서 소개하는 작업이 중심을 차지하고 있다. 세 번째 단계에서는 현대인의 입장에서 효에 관해 물음직한 질문들을 효의 의미에 관한 질문, 효의 정당화에 관한 질문, 셋째, 방법적, 실천적 질문들로 세 가지로 분류한 뒤, 『효경』의 작자가 그것들에 대해 내놓을 대답과 난점들을 해결해가면서 비교적 모순 없이 일관된 효의 이론을 제시하고자 하였다. 결론에서는, 이상의 논의의 교육적 시사를 드러내고자 하였다.

The Filial Piety is a long cherished virtue in East Asian countries, nevertheless its modern relevance is often challenged today. This paper is trying to introduce modern readers into the moral world of Filial Piety through the Book of Filial Piety. The first part provides some historical informations about the book. It includes controversies about the textual authenticity, various exegeses, and their introduction to the Korean Peninsula. The second part extracts a message from this book in relation with the legend of Shun. The message is that the highest morality of human kind had been set by ancient sage-emperors like Yao and Shun, and the core of their morality had developed from the virtue of Filial Piety. The modern readers might entertain various questions on the Filial Piety, such as "What is Filial Piety?, Why should we respect our parents?, How could we practice the virtue of Filial Piety in our daily lives?" If such questions might be asked, how the Book will answer? I collected and arranged some Confucian utterances so as to Confucian doctrines into a coherent whole without contradiction as far as possible. Finally a suggestion concerning the problem of education of Filial Piety was expressed in the concluding chapter.
