한문학 연구에서 금석문 자료는 문헌자료의 한계를 보완하는 기능을 한다. 또한 금석문에 대한 연찬은 지식학의 발달사에서 매우 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 곧, 금석문들은 일차적으로 한문학 연구의 대상이나 기초자료로 삼을 수가 있다. 첫 번째로 금석문의 모든 자료는 소학(문자, 음운학, 훈고학) 발달의 역사를 서술하는데 1차 자료가 된다. 두 번째로 금석문 가운데 완전한 형식을 갖춘 것은 장르 및 문체 연구의 자료가 된다. 세 번째로 墓主, 소장자, 제작자, 찬술자가 밝혀져 있는 자료는 한문학사 및 지성사를 서술할 때 인물 연구와 사회문화 토대 연구에 활용할 수 있다. 본고에서는 금석문 가운데 완전한 형식을 갖춘 것은 장르 및 문체 연구의 자료로 삼는 방법론에 대해 집중적으로 검토하였다. 특히 묘도문자의 장르가 정착된 고려시대의 자료를 대상으로 삼아, 고려 碑誌의 문체적 특정을 살피고, 금석문을 문학적으로 연구하는 방법을 피력하였다. 즉, 고려 묘도문자의 石刻과 文集 資料를 대조하는 문제를 제기하고, 古文의 墓道文字 장르와 押韻 銘 양식의 정착 과정을 살핀 후, 고려 초의 買地券, 女性 墓主의 墓誌와 天折者의 幕誌, 自撰의 碑誌, 고려 말 사대부의 神道碑 및 墓表에 대해 검토하였으며, 고려·조선에 걸쳐 碑誌의 제작에 관한 禁令이나 관습에 대해 조사할 필요성을 제기했다.

Epitaph materials supplement insufficiency of records in researching classical Chinese literature. They can be used as sources of historical research by which the history of knowledge can be properly understood. First of all, epitaph materials can be used as the sauces of history of Chinese philology, Xiaoxue(小學, elementary studies) which is divided into three branches: Xungu(訓고, exegesis), Wenzi(文字, script analysis) and Yinyun(音韻, studies of sounds and rimes). Secondly, literary genre or style represented in each epitaph can be the object of research either. Finally, an epitaph which records information on the dead person, the author and the writer of the epitaph etc. can be used as material for the research on the dead person himself and social environment around him at that time. In this paper I concentrated on the second point: Epitaphs in Goryeo Period were used as sources in which literary style of epitaph was established and their stylistic features were scrutinized. Also the way of treating epitaph as literary works was represented as well.
