본고는 연민선생의 학덕을 기리고, 선생이 끼친 고전번역의 공로를 기념하는 일환으로 기획되었다. 그러나 본고는 연민선생의 지대한 공로를 전제하면서도 연민 번역본 연암소설의 새로운 마련을 위해 선생의 번역작업상 특이점들을 점검하고자 한다. 특이점 고찰의 방법으로 본고에서는 다른 번역본들과 연민선생의 번역을 비교하는 작업을 선택했다. 그리고 비교의 대상으로는 연암소설을 10편을 모두 번역한 바 있는 홍기문, 이가원, 이우성·임형택, 선호열·김명호 등의 번역본을 비교대상으로 하되, 논의의 집중을 위해 『양반전」 번역을 중심으로 비교 검토했다. 이러한 양반전 번역의 실제적 비교를 통해서 연민선생의 연암소설 번역의 특징을 정리해보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 비판과 풍자가 극명하게 드러나도록 했다는 점, 둘째, 입말의 활용을 통해 생동적인 번역을 추구했다는 점, 셋째, 번역자가 파악한 인물성격에 맞게 인물형이 잘 드러나도록 번역했다는 점, 넷째, 오역과 생삽한 직역을 극복했다는 점 등이다. 그러나 때로는 선생의 이러한 번역의도가 지나치게 본문의 내용을 변형시킬 때도 있음을 확인했다. 고전은 아무리 훌륭한 번역이 있어도 한 세대마다 반드시 새롭게 번역되어야 한다는 연민선생의 지론을 떠올려 볼 때, 연민선생의 연암소설을 재번역될 필요가 있다. 이를 위해서도 연민선생의 번역상 장점과 단점을 잘 파악하여 그 계승과 극복에 대해 논의할 필요가 있다.
This Essay is based on praising of the late Dr. Prof. Yeonmin(淵民, a allonym of Kawon, Li)`s the scholastic achievements and his translations of classical literature. However, I will also treat his works of translation critically, preparing for a new translated version of Yeonam(燕巖)`s short stories which is belong to Yeonmin.. In this article, I compared the translations of Yeonmin to other person`s translations for clarify the distinguishing mark of Yeonmin`s version. The versions of other persons who have translated all of Yeonam`s short stories are as follows; Kimun Hong, Kawon Lee, Useong Lee & Hyoungtaek Lim, Hoyeol Shin & Myoungho Kim etc. Much attention is given to Yangbanjeon(兩班傳) translation for concentration of this discussion. For all these comparison given previously, especially by focusing on translation of Yangbanjeon, Yeonmin`s distinctive features are as the below; Firstly he brought out the criticism and satire of the texts in sharp relief. Secondly, he pursued to make atmosphere vivid in translation by using colloquial language. Thirdly, he delicately embodied characters which is accorded with his understanding. Finally he overcame mistakes and awkward literal translation. Sometimes, however, I also confirmed that he also distorted the meaning of texts too much resulted from such of his intention on translation. When I remember his mention "Classics need to be newly translated though elaborative translated version exists already.", it is necessary that his translations of Yeonam`s short stories is revised now. In connection with this issue, it is worth discussing about how to success and improve his translations, with attention on his strong and weak point on translation.
