이 글은 2008 미국 대선에서의 오바마 현상이 가지는 두 가지 의미를 정리하고 한국 민주주의론에의 시사점을 도출해내고 있다. 이는 첫째로 자유주의 이념의 혁신, 특히 공화주의적 애국주의의 문제의식과 둘째로 민주당 풀뿌리 토대의 혁신이라는 정당정치론의 혁신을 살펴보고자 한다. 이 글은 이 두 가지 문제의식이 한국의 최근 광우병 촛불시위에서도 유사하게 드러남에 주목하며 한국 민주주의 발전에의 시사점을 제시하고자한다.

The image of Obama in the popular press is that of a great communicator who is able to convey a message with excellent rhetorical skills. However, this characterization reflect a limited perspective of the historical meanings that characterize his political success. In this paper, Obama`s political success is analyzed through the framework of republican patriotism and new way of party politics. when viewed from this angle, this paper argues that Obama`s success could have various implications for liberal as well as progressive forces in Korean politics.
